Movie Genre - Top Ten Action Films

It is going to be a long hot summer so I think we need a side dish of movie discussion to keep us movie nerds entertained.

We have in the past compiled our top film of each year from each decade but that regularly overlooks movies that come from genre’s that may not be considered serious or artistic. I love films as long as they are made well and believe that just because a film is an action film for example, doesn’t mean it can’t have artistic merit or require great technical skills.

So anyway… here’s my top ten films of all time…

1. Predator (1987) Directed by John McTiernan

Has stood the test of time and is still my go to film for escapism. Arnie at his best and a support cast that compliments him well. John McTiernan is hands down the greatest action film director of all time.

2. Battle Royale (2000) Directed by Kinji Fukasaku

A no-holds-barred fight to death between a group of 9th Grade Japanese students. The direction and cinematography are some of the best you will see, let alone from a bloodthirsty action film.

3. Oldboy (2003) Directed by Chan-wook Park

The film that started it all for Sth Korea. Masterpiece.

4. The Raid: Redemption (2011) Directed by Gareth Evans

Hands down the best fight scenes of any action/martial arts film ever.

5. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) Directed by George Miller

William Friedkin showed us how a car chase should be filmed, Miller took what he learned from that and added steroids. Changed the whole landscape after this.

6. Big Trouble in Little China (1986) Directed by john Carpenter

Underrated classic directed by an underrated director.

7. Point Break (1991) Directed by Kathryn Bigelow

Watched this recently. Still stands up. Classic.

8. Dirty Harry (1971) Directed by Don Siegel

Whats not too love. Clint Eastwood cruising around San Francisco at the height of his career.

9. Police Story (1985) Directed by Jackie Chan

So many awesome action scenes.

10. Jurassic Park (1993) Directed by Steven Spielberg

Along with Terminator one of the first films to use CGI so effectively.

Any list that doesn’t have T2 at the #1 spot is wrong.

Rare occasion where the sequel surpassed the original, God Father 2 also does.

I just can’t believe Street Fighter isn’t on anyone’s list :scream_cat:

In no particular order…
The Dark Knight
Terminator 2
Avengers Infinity War
Die Hard
Point Break
Predator
Iron Man
Man on Fire
Beverly Hills Cop
Gladiator

Superman, Indiana Jones and Lethal Weapon unlucky to miss out.
I’m assuming Star Wars is sci-fi rather than action.

Hell yeah. Kou Shibasaki is on Japanese tv regularly and my big crush on her began with this film and her role of Mitsuko.

  1. Terminator 2. By such a distance it’s not even funny

The rest is no particular order:

The Rock
Con Air
The Raid 2 (the first one is great but the 2nd one is just insanity from start to finish)
Die Hard 1
Lethal Weapon 1
Aliens
Terminator
Predator
Hard Boiled (if you want to see some of the most insane shootouts ever put on film, just watch this)

I would put Dark Knight right near the top but i count that as a comic book movie

There are so many more i could throw in. One of the more underrated action films is the Long Kiss Goodnight

Some of Jackie chans early stuff is amazing to watch

What is an action flick is hard to define?

Is Saving Private Ryan?

Rocky?

Crouching Tiger?

I grappled with this question also, then asked myself “What movies would my wife least like to watch?”

First Terminator is better IMO.

I haven’t seen crouching tiger. But i would consider the other 2 drama’s with action scenes in it. That’s why i didn’t put inception in my list. I consider it a thriller with action

No love for First Blood, Rocky 3 or Roadhouse??? Highlander is another all time fave & I do love The Running Man for some great violence & corny 1 liners. Just remembered Sin City & Aliens would all be in contention for my top 10 along with some of the staples like T2 & Die Hard.
