It is going to be a long hot summer so I think we need a side dish of movie discussion to keep us movie nerds entertained.
We have in the past compiled our top film of each year from each decade but that regularly overlooks movies that come from genre’s that may not be considered serious or artistic. I love films as long as they are made well and believe that just because a film is an action film for example, doesn’t mean it can’t have artistic merit or require great technical skills.
So anyway… here’s my top ten films of all time…
1. Predator (1987) Directed by John McTiernan
Has stood the test of time and is still my go to film for escapism. Arnie at his best and a support cast that compliments him well. John McTiernan is hands down the greatest action film director of all time.
2. Battle Royale (2000) Directed by Kinji Fukasaku
A no-holds-barred fight to death between a group of 9th Grade Japanese students. The direction and cinematography are some of the best you will see, let alone from a bloodthirsty action film.
3. Oldboy (2003) Directed by Chan-wook Park
The film that started it all for Sth Korea. Masterpiece.
4. The Raid: Redemption (2011) Directed by Gareth Evans
Hands down the best fight scenes of any action/martial arts film ever.
5. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) Directed by George Miller
William Friedkin showed us how a car chase should be filmed, Miller took what he learned from that and added steroids. Changed the whole landscape after this.
6. Big Trouble in Little China (1986) Directed by john Carpenter
Underrated classic directed by an underrated director.
7. Point Break (1991) Directed by Kathryn Bigelow
Watched this recently. Still stands up. Classic.
8. Dirty Harry (1971) Directed by Don Siegel
Whats not too love. Clint Eastwood cruising around San Francisco at the height of his career.
9. Police Story (1985) Directed by Jackie Chan
So many awesome action scenes.
10. Jurassic Park (1993) Directed by Steven Spielberg
Along with Terminator one of the first films to use CGI so effectively.
