Full Metal Jacket for mine is a tale of two halves. First half is absolutely brilliant with the training and drill sergeant. 2nd half is as boring as anything
Forgot the black sheep squadron
My dad was in the air force.
He unfortunately died in a Canberra bomber crash.
Very sorry to hear that.
Stretching the definition…
The Great Escape
Dr Strangelove or…
Lawrence of Arabia
Apocalypse Now
Zulu
Henry V (Branagh)
Excalibur
Star Wars
Return of the King
Casablanca
Does Tropic Thunder count as a war film.
Never go full retard
I still haven’t gotten over Tom Cruise in that film.
Just never thought he play a character that way
Its not quite as gritty & raw as Das Boot but I enjoyed U571
Has anyone mentioned films like Waterloo & Cromwell - I enjoy some of the older battles more than massive explosions & fast action that can be hard to follow.
Glory is another I don’t think I’ve seen on many lists.
I have watched it twice, and it has put me to sleep at a couple of stages both times. Make of that what you will.
Ashes and Diamonds
Conspiracy of Hearts
Not familiar with either of them.
Ashes and Diamonds - uprising in Polish Ghetto
Conspiracy of Hearts - Italian nuns hiding a Jewish kids
Any list that doesn’t include both dirty dozen and great escape can gtfo
You could say the same thing about Apocalypse Now. I found the second half unintelligible and excruciatingly boring.
At least the second half of FMJ had some good dialogue.
I think the second half of FMJ not only has one iconic moment, which I am too bashful to point out, but…c’mon, you know, but it finishes with absolute tragedy and pointlessness, which is a major marker for a war film for me.
Great Escape is basically River Kwai for me.
Both great movies, but I’m not comfortable calling them war films at all.
I dont much like raw action movies. I tend to like anti-war movies. My top ten would be-
Paths of Glory
All Quiet on the Western Front
Grand Illusion
Full Metal Jacket
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Bridge on the River Kwai
Schindlers List
Das Boot
Story of GI Joe
The Longest Day
Then-
They Were Expendable
The Train
Letters from Iwo Jima
One of our Aircraft is Missing
The Lost Patrol
Lawrence of Arabia
Stalingrad the 1993 film definitely has to be in anyone’s top ten war film. Brutal.
Good call
Dr Strangelove is great but not really a war film.
Just settling in to watch the excellent Das Boot (The Boat), the best and most authentic submarine film of all. SBS World Movies has a series of war movies on this week, but l haven’t checked on the titles.
The also excellent Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is on next Saturday.
