Movie Genre - Top Ten War Films

I see why you call yourself humble.

I thought Dunkirk was fantastic.
Attention to detail. Acting. Cinematography. Soundtrack. The editing was a bit off making it harder to follow than it needed to be in places.

Can’t believe there’s not more votes. I’d place it as one of the best movies I’ve seen, since Dunkirk!
Amazing cinema experience. I think it casts a shadow on plenty of the others listed above for a variety of reasons. The ‘one’ shot appeal pack is incredibly immersive and tense.

What about Carrie Foster ?

Not sure if it would squeeze into my ten or not, but haven’t seen Patton mentioned.

Hadn’t considered it as a wear movie, but upon reflection it qualities. Another movie in my all time top 5. This was Ridley Scott’s directing debut, and the entire movie was made for less than $100,000. Arthur Dignam, an Australian plays a minor part, possibly due to having a very Gallic looking nose. I met him once in Sydney, sadly it was long before this film was made.

More trivia, the final scene where Harvey looks out over a river was filmed very close to the village of Mauzac on the Dordognne river. I worked and stayed there training some locals in 2007, and used to regularly walk my landladies 2 dogs past that very spot!

A great 1970s WW1 film - Aces High

Starred Malcolm McDowell in his prime.

Didn’t mind either of them, but didn’t like them enough to give them honourable mentions. I left out of my notes that l have many more war movies, but also didn’t consider them good enough. Much was made at the time of the release of Full Metal Jacket about how well it captured the scenery of Vietnam, while being shot on some deserted dockland in London. Having been to Vietnam 7 times and travelled there extensively, l assure you this is not the case. Full Metal Jacket is more about the dehumanizing of soldiers in training, than it is about war.

For me both of these films suffer when compared to Apocalypse Now, which goes far beyond was and far beyond Vietnam in its scope.

See my post above.

Anyone mentioned ‘The Great Escape’ yet? I saw that at the Saturday matinee as a kid and thought it was the duck’s nuts. In the same vein, I also loved ‘The Wooden Horse’ from that P.O.W. genre.
