Music You've Been Listening To

How the hell did I miss this in BDJ 2-3 minutes?

I really like James.

I kid you not, it was in my 3 options to choose from. Needless to say, I went with the wrong one…

i’ve been listening to a lot of Stoner/Psychedelia the last few months and have really enjoyed 1000mods back catalogue, and as it turns out they are playing at the Corner in Feb, so that’s a win.

I’ve been gently reacquainting myself with REM after they ruined things with the atrocious Monster album and a shockingly poor show at the Music Bowl in early 1995.

I’ve struggled with them since, but this week have delved into their albums again. In doing so I’m reminded of things…
Why I liked their early stuff so much
That I still don’t care for much after Out of Time
That Shiny Happy People is great (despite being much maligned).
That Bad Day is good (though it’s effectively a re-write of It’s The End Of The World… isn’t it?)
That Monster still sucks balls…
That What’s The Frequency Kenneth especially sucks balls.
That they lost a great deal when Bill Berry quit.

Anyway, this song is top drawer… don’t know if they ever topped it…

Fall On Me and Driver 8 have only grown on me over time. Two faves.

I think Imitation of Life is seriously top tier.
Leaving New York…is good.
Just good.

I just listened to Radio Free Europe so my standards are diminished, although South Central Rain is still up there.

Automatic, imo, is seriously unfairly maligned.
It’s a great album.
If it was their second album people would go nuts for it.

Those parent albums- Life’s Rich Paegant and Fables Of The Reconstruction - are definitely still my favourites of theirs…

Driver 8 is good.
No doubt.

Green is always going to be their definitive album for me.
I have to hold my nose a bit for Stand and Pop Song, but apart from that…bloody hell.

I somehow convinced my brother to include Dream Academy’s cover of Please, and REM’s You Are The Everything into his wedding.

Not sorry.

I was surprised by how well Out Of Time has held up. I haven’t listened to it in 25 years and it sounded pretty good. Sure Radio Song is a serious mis-step (I mean, what were they thinking but especially, what were they thinking in making it track 1 side 1??) but otherwise it was very, very listenable. Not sure I needed to hear Losing My Religion again though…

I prepared all the song lists for my own wedding, and You Are The Everything was in there.

It really is.
But Losing My Religion is hurt by being so good.
cf: Money For Nothing.
Genuinely good songs.

But also, Country Feedback which is just devastating.
Near Wild Heaven.

Still think Automatic is the better album.

Drive, obv.
Man on the Moon.
Try Not To Breathe.
Fark Me, Kitten.

Edit: lol. I literally forgot Everybody Hurts, which has claims for any best songs of all time.

My man.

Being DJ for Mrs Wim and her friend on a sleepover isn’t a bad covid job.

I still think Cowboy Goth was a brave choice.
