Swoodleys 60s album survey has sent me on a John Lee Hooker deep dive. Ive got a lot of his records. Probably 20 plus. Some are pretty average sounding. But some are incredible
This one from 72 is so farking good. It completely cooks from start to finish. The whole album is just locking into agroove and going for it. Simple ■■■■. But so effective.
Spent the last few nights listening to versions of Dobie Gray’s classic, “Drift Away”. I do this regularly for songs I like from the past and reckon this is a song most versions tend to copy rather than interpret. Ain’t listened to them all, too many for that, but this countrified acoustic version is my clear fav, some tasty guitar and box board? in there too.
Starts uncharacteristcally poorly (Generals is not a great song, and very much a product of its time production-wise).
From there it’s superb until about hafway through side two when it tails off a bit.
Still, the good bits are very, very good indeed.
