Man, if you havenāt checked out the band Geese, then, in those immortalized words, do yourself a favor. Their album 3D Country a couple years ago was great, but their new one, Getting Killed is sublime. And they are touring Australia this Summer.
I donāt evenā¦know if I ever knew or just forgot that Josie Jason died in 2011.
Seems weird to feel sad about it 14 years after the fact.
First time I ever got on a stage was a local community hall gig where my band opened for Josie Jason & The Argonauts. My band was called Star Me Kitten, after the REM song, and we played a grand total of one show.
Given the hype around Geese, I figured I should probably find out what the fuss is about.
Have to say, I found them thoroughly underwhelming. Different strokes, different folks and all thatā¦
Itās not massively surprising⦠I find most acts the press fawn over are ā ā ā ā .
The drony, scratchy repetitive music is OK but hardly revolutionary. Belgian band dEUS were doing similar on their first album 30 years ago. Ditto Can 50 years ago.
What kills it stone dead for me though is the vocals. Absolutely atrocious singing.
Iāll give it another few goes before I give up but, as of now, first impressions are not good.
Love that story.
Thatās funny, cos I listened to a few songs the other day and thought at least the singer had something different going on, kinda croony/soulful in parts. But yeah, need to listen a bit more cos the songs werenāt sticking.
Yeah, they desperately lack tunes and hooks for me. I thought of your post from the other day bemoaning the lack of just that in many new acts.
This was actually one of the bands leading to that post.
Yeah, they are a bit of a challenge on the first couple of listens, but once you get into what they are doing itās great stuff. And his phrasing is not conventional at times but his voice is great. His got a little bit of Jim Morrison going on at times I reckon.
And you need to listen to the whole album in order. It makes a bit more sense than just picking songs.
Great b-side
Iāve found it a bit of a chore with the new album after really enjoying 3D Country. If you are looking for a way in maybe try that one. More of a Stones vibe and his Winterās vocals shine on that record.
I donāt know any of her originals, but sheās pretty, pretty good.
I found the new one difficult to get into at first and preferred 3D Country. But something clicked this week and I canāt get enough of the new one. I think itās because of this live recording of them at the basement.
