Good call Jez… I liked Supercar (a mate who lives in Tokyo put me onto them… I gather they were quite big in their time). With their gibberish Japanese/Engrish lyrics, male/female vocal interplay and power-pop/dream-pop leanings, they had a groovy sound happening. They started to get really interesting when they expanded their sound later on and started playing around with electronic soundscapes… then they split up. Played this in the non-Western bands BDJ round…
Also liked LAMA… the short-lived project that a couple of Supercar members went onto…
They’ve somehow passed me by, or I’ve glossed over them, but this Lucky song came on the car radio when I was driving the other day and I had to pull over and Shazam it. Yeah, they certainly shifted their sound after 2000.
I don’t know why it gets, or at least used to get so much less hype than Peppers. I don’t know why it wasn’t Revolver that was said to have blown everyone away.
For one album from a pop band to have songs as diverse as Taxman, Eleanor Rigby, Good Day Sunshine, Tomorrow Never Knows, and yes even silly old Yellow Submarine…
I tried to look for info about it online but there doesn’t appear to be any. Miki the bassist is not on set with them, but instead is wandering around Australia. Interesting, maybe she had a holiday planned!
30 years ago everything was Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road. Deservedly so… the latter in particular is my go-to Beatles album. It seems nowadays that Revolver (which is probably my 2nd fave) and Rubber Soul are rightfully getting their flowers as well.
I remember going to club called The Rubber Soul during the mid 80s.
I just googled it…it was at The Carron Tavern in West Melbourne. A group of us from work would usually meet at the Moonee Ponds Tavern straight after work on Fridays…some nights it would just be for a few drinks and then head home…the best nights were the ones where we ended up at Rubber Soul.
I have some good memories of nights spent there.
In Melbourne, Rubber Soul primarily refers to a popular 1960s/Beatles-themed tribute band and occasional nostalgic nightclub reunion events. It also evokes memories of the iconic 1980s West Melbourne 60s music venue of the same name.
Currently listening to the bonus CD (22 Reasons Why A Band Shouldn’t Put An Album Out In Its First Few Years) which came with The Fauves’ first album Drive Through Charisma.
As they correctly identified, it’s pretty hard-going. A handful of semi-decent songs, but it sounds very much like a band trying on different clothes to see what suits.
What I am particularly enjoying though is the liner notes that come with the bonus disk, which essentially ■■■■■ on each and every one of the songs… For example: “Not even 11 beers, 2 tabs of the sickest acid and half a dozen cones of mind-blowing New Guinea buds could make the dropout/feedback bit in the middle of this track sound interesting. All I can say is that it must’ve been the producer’s idea. What a turkey”. “These songs were so utterly mundane that we never even bothered to argue about whether to keep them or not” “Unfortunately the guitarist’s theory that it was possible to play one riff on an acoustic guitar for six minutes and not be a boring, pretentious ■■■■■■■ proved to be inaccurate”. “Listen as a youthful band struggles to find its voice and, having found it, refuses to shut the ■■■■ up”. “We were despairing of ever getting our records out. We were constantly being betrayed by record company wankers devoted to concepts like “hooks” and “units” but sadly unable to comprehend the value of “ideas” (this CD may not indicate it, but we did have one at this time). Well ■■■■ 'em… we don’t want to suck corporate ■■■■ anyway… errr… except Polydor… mmm, yummy”. [Polydor being the label that released said album]…
