Music You've Been Listening To

Sirens was written after McCready went to Waters’ Wall show, and he was very much going for a Floyd sound. It’s funny, because I ain’t feeling it.

This bloke ain't too bad!

getting back into slayer, megadeth etc. it seems so harmless now, almost spinal tap like.

just seen line up for soundwave. AIC and STP sans frontmen for various reasons. what to do...

Rock in Rio ruled with AIC!!!!

The vocals are great on this track, ya know, it's nice.
If anything this song is in the vein of Black or Alive, they were slower tempo floydesque numbers in a way.
The only difference is that the band plays along with the vocal instead of breaking into a grungy riff. That's about it.
To call the song horrible, shows to me, a lack of understanding of Pearl Jams back catalogue over the past 20 or so years.

OK let me start by saying I have seen PJ more times than I care to name.
Ive seen them here. 3 times on there 1st tour in 3 different states.
Ive seen them play in Seattle. fark I caught a plectrum that goes with me everywhere I go.
So yes I am familiar with there back catalogue.
You summed it up perfectly. Nice. That is not what I look for when listening to a PJ album.
I want to be transcended to when I was 18. I don't want to feel 40, which is what this song does.
Ill give you an example of what I'm talking about.
2 years ago I saw STP and felt old.
Last year I saw Soundgarden and it made me feel young and relevant.
Music emotes. This song makes me think "Eagles" more than "Floyd". To compare it to Black is a joke. Black gives me goose bumps. It's so raw.
And to compare it to alive shows your true lack of understanding. You realise that the film clip to alive is filmed live and the song is a live recording of the song not the album version? This song is the complete opposite of that.
I kind of agree with you. But I thought Mind Your Manners ripped. Maybe Sirens needs a few more listens.
I watched the PJ doco Twenty last night. One of the best music docos I've seen. Check it out if you haven't (though I'm guessing you have already).
Yeah I was there opening night.
I thought it was pretty good but the problem was Cameron was to much of a fanboy and didn't really delve into the dark days after Vitalogy.
Have you seen Dig? the year that punk broke or Anvil. Now they are music docos.

Yes, I've seen Dig and the Anvil doco. Loved them both. But really, I enjoy almost any music doco, even if I'm not that into the music. It Might Get Loud is the one I've enjoyed most of recent releases.

That Wall show blew my mind. Epic. But like you, I don't see the connection, even after you've pointed out that McCready was influenced by it.
Musically the Wall show was a sonic facsimile of the album. Reproducing an album like that normally doesn't float my boat. But the surround sound and the visuals were unlike anything I've experienced before.

Pearl Jam - Sirens

This is actually really sad.

This is soft rock at best.

Pearl Jam remember your first film clip? You actually played live? and recorded it? with passion.

What is this horrible tune that you are miming in a pseudo live performance.

Go back and watch what made you awesome.

I'm 40 but don't want to feel it. This song makes me feel old and that is not why I listen to Pearl Jam,

I don't want Pearl Jam to be old grunge rockers, I love how PJ have evolved maybe you should listen to the following Nothingman, Off he goes, Wishlist, Light Years, I am mine, Parachutes, Come Back, Amongst the waves

I love those songs.

This does not stack up to any of them.

This is middle of the road, over produced, classic rock. Deplorable.

Don't get hung up on the fact it has a Pearl Jam label. And the clip, well....

The first single rocked. I have no idea how this will all flow in the album. We will have to wait and see.

^ Well I really like it

Maybe give it some time.

What specifically about the song bothers you? For me it feels like that it would fit onto Avacado or Yield.

Alright, after another listen I can pick up a couple of things.

The lead break, certainly, and the Buh-bow-bowm chord progression.

But the idea of Floyd meets grunge is never going to work anyway.

Grunge is about feel, Floyd is precise.

Grunge is everyone (sort of…close enough for grunge) together all at once, while Floyd is about space, all the elements separate but coming together.

The song is okay.

It could do with the lyrics being a bit more…well, precise, pared back.

And Pearl Jam absolutely know how to do that.

It certainly has that Pearl Jam stamp of quality.

The issue I have is that it seems not better or worse than a lot of their material. I think for me the vocals are really good from Eddie on this song.

I've heard half of the new PJ album, and it's definitely Backspacer part II, but still 5 good songs make it worth it, for PJ. As they are getting older as a band. Anything good is a bonus, as they don't have to release anything, I mean they could have retired after Yield. But they still bring out an album every few years.

On a side note, have you heard the Into the Wild soundtrack?? That was brilliant.
