Music's greatest opening lines

smile
If you want to call it one line then just put it all on one line without a break.
Fair?

Living in Thailand for so long l was subjected to endless versions of Hotel California. Would you believe there are nights where local bands compete and every one of them has to play HC. Many Thais consider it the greatest rock song of all time and that it contains the best guitar solo of all time. I took some delight in telling them that HC was in fact not a solo, but a duet. It isn’t the only song l don’t care if l never hear again.

You just have problem with commas.

You can have a comma.
I’m talking about lines.
So.

There’s a lady who’s sure, all that glitters is gold.

I’ve been listening to it for almost 50 years and could keep doing so for another 50.

Although it’s only my 2nd favourite track from the album.

Yeah, and

Is a line.

New Kid In Town or The Last Resort?

The Last Resort

One of the most poignant (and relevant) verses ever written (imo)

They call it paradise
I don’t know why
You call someplace paradise
Kiss it goodbye

Of their latter material l like Those Shoes.

I think most people wouldn’t consider a coma and minimal pause in the lyrics as the end of an opening line. Every time I’ve seen it listed the opening line includes “Cool wind in my hair”. Another good example would be a song like The day you went away by Wendy Matthews. Would you consider the opening line to just be “Hey” or the full “Hey, does it ever make you wonder what’s on my mind” as it appears in every lyrics list? There’s probably a lot of similar examples where something like “hey” is used as the 1st lyric. Neal Young’s Out of the Blue, I would consider the opening line to be “My My, Hey Hey” rather than just My My. Like stairway, if you look at the album lyrics it has the full line.

I’m also a big fan of Wasted Time.

I’ve never really been sure why some people shun The Eagles or try to make out like they weren’t one of the greatest of all time. Strange.

I do wonder how those lines would be written in poetry.
I might be on a wrong ‘un but I’d guess
My my, hey hey

And
Hey,
Does it ever…

Again, people seem to think I’m more upset or strident about it than I am. It’s just interesting.

Shall I compare thee to a summers day

I mean…surely That is the opening line…

James addiction - just because
If I was you
I’d better watch out
When was the last time
You did anything

Amo amo - antidote
I spend too much time in calculation
I’m living all the time inside my head
My body and my mind are in separation
How do I get them back together again?

Grateful dead - he’s gone
Rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb, you know better but I know him
Like I told you, what I said, steal your face right off your head
Now he’s gone, now he’s gone, Lord he’s gone, he’s gone
Like a steam locomotive, rollin’ down the track

I woke up this morning with a bad hangover
And my ■■■■■ was missing again.
This happens all the time.
It’s detachable.

You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning

Sure, unlike half of the stuff here

If we’re sticking to one line, you pretty much can’t go past ‘Hello darkness my old friend’

I’ll put in a word for ‘It is complete now,’ though.

There is a great story behind that line about darkness, well worth tracking down and reading. It has to do with a friend of Art Garfunkel, who was blind.

One two, one two three…
