Next Generation Academies

Thanks for the info.
Isa impressed in a praccy match.
We once had a kid named Zac with the same surname so I momentarily thought he must be related.

I guess that is something to thank BS for.

I’ve seen Isa play he has a nice left foot, but I thought he played for doutta stars. There are a few merhi’s getting around, another one named Ali is pretty good, a few years younger and I think he would be academy eligible. He’s a small forward, has some good tricks but is tiny, so hopefully he’s in our academy and grows a bit.

Tassie will be taking all the cream tho they are able to sign up to six 17 year olds this year leaving the 2027 top end of the draft diluted

The next 2-3 drafts will be compromised might not be such a bad idea to trade in for quality players to compliment the younger guys we drafted the last 3 years

I think 2026 should be our last draft we grab Bewick in 2027 then splash the cash

Isa does play for Doutta Stars, was called up in the U18’s team that played in the EDFL Prem U18 Grand Final last year. I’ve know the family for a long time, he was offered NGA with Essendon but knocked it back, not sure why. Has also recently moved to St Bernards so will be playing some school footy with Tavita as well as at Cannons.

Knocking back a club nga offer is definitely a strange move.

That’s not what his father told me - he said that Essendon asked if he (Lebanese) or his wife (Maltese) was born overseas because they wanted to add Isa to the academy but both of them were born here, so Isa wasn’t eligible.

Guessing I misunderstood the conversation and he rather ā€œhadā€ to knock it back as he didn’t qualify rather than just knocking it back. Nice kid, very quick.

Essendon won’t compromise their draft picks; they won’t trade in superstars of the comp who will demand a ridiculous price; they are more inclined to bring in players to fill a gap; they will likely focus on forwards, an area of need. Whatever strategy used by Rosa / Vozzo (in his consultancy role) will be to the benefit of the EFC.

would be doing themselves a favour by not trading.

Don’t Port also have two ahead of him? I think it may come down to what draft capital either side has for 2027 post the 2026 draft.

Looks good in that training top

I doubt anyone not linked to a club will opt out. Tasmania have 7 of the first 13 picks in 2027, so you’re a good chance to go there anyway. Opt-in gives you an extra year of salary and focused development.

I can’t recall news of anyone rejecting GWS or GC.

That would really Sruk for Tassie if Baxter opted out.

They only get to use 3 for picks (1, 3, and 9), the rest have to be traded or can be ā€œrolled forward up to 2 yearsā€ā€¦ whatever the hell that means…

Think there’s some rule around trading them for picks as well, but can’t find what it was.

No, they get 4 of them. But they also get whatever is traded for mini-draft picks, so likely add picks 2 and 4 in there.

"First pick in the 2027 national draft

The Devils will get the number one selection in the 2027 National Draft along with picks 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13, but selections 5, 7, 11 and 13 must be traded to other clubs either for players or other draft picks."

My mistake.
