A rookie QB going in and immediately being asked to carry a 2-15 team from the year before is an arduous process that many people simply won’t have the patience to wait out.

Yep - exactly. And if there isn’t immediate success it reflects poorly on the QB not necessarily the team. Bryce Young a perfect recent example of this.

Sanders goes 5th round (144) to the Browns, their 2nd QB in the draft.
Mel Keiper (the Essington of draft “gurus”) will be foaming at the mouth by now.

That makes Sanders the 4th QB on the Browns list with Flacco, Pickett and Gabriel. Most teams only carry 3 onto the 55-man roster, so Sanders may not make the cut.

Pickett is pretty rubbish.

Can they cut the rapist? (They should)

I completely forgot about Watson! He’ll likely miss the whole season anyway with an obliterated achilles, but the Browns owe him a gajillion dollars on his ridiculously guaranteed contract, so it remains to be seen whether they accept he is complete rubbish on the field, an execrable stain of a human being off the field, poison in the locker-room, and detested by their own fans, and therefore cut him. There is no way in hell anyone would trade for him, or even pick him up if he was cut.
Almosy certainly the worst trade in NFL history.
The Browns trade with the Jags at the top of the first round netted them the Jags 1st for 2026, so I think they’re simply stop-gapping at QB until they can cut Watson for less salary hit, and then pick up a better option at the draft in the future.

So Shedeur goes to the Browns anyway, after they passed on him multiple times already and drafted a much less heralded QB in front of him.
It might have been less humiliating if he hadn’t been picked at all.
Cruel but funny at the same time.

Perhaps a little bit of a power play so they can keep Deion under control?
If you’re picked in the 5th round, you’re a depth prospect with no guarantee of making the roster. And if you can’t out-perform Kenny Pickett or Dillon Gabriel, you probably don’t deserve to make the roster.

Here’s a good analysis of the Sanders pick.
I’ve watched a lot of Shadeur’s games, and he makes dumb mistakes. He holds the ball way too long forcing his line to have to block for 5+ seconds frequently. In college, you might be able to get away with that, although he was sacked like 90 times in two years. In the NFL, you’re going to get hurt if you hold the ball that long.
He doesn’t know how to throw the ball away, leading to more sacks. Sometimes, it is better to take the 0 play instead of hoping for the big play because you’ll often end up with the massive negative play. He was also prone to staring down his WR (often Hunter) and threw a lot of passes behind the line of scrimmage, resulting in questions about how well he could throw the deep ball (I do think the emphasis that is placed on the deep ball is overrated because most passes are shorter and it is often at least a 5:1 ratio of short to deep passes). Add in the fact that he did not throw at the combine or his pro day, plus skipped the senior bowl, and teams really had no ability to judge that skillset required to play the QB position. He was good at throwing short in college (not a bad thing, and a very good thing in the NFL), but his accuracy when throwing deep was questioned and he skipped the chances to show that (I think the combine is overrated and that most questions about a player can be answered by looking at their tape from college).
Next, he was apparently very cocky in his pre-draft interviews. There are reports that he told teams not to draft him if he would have to compete for the starting job. There are reports that he did not come prepared to interviews. There are reports that he took phone calls during interviews. There are reports that he was super arrogant. Of course, these reports don’t have names attached to them, but when numerous ones surface and numerous ones surface that say basically the same thing, there is a good chance that they are correct.
Then you get to the Prime Time issue. Deion has a huge following. Deion has also been Shadeur’s only coach, ever, going back to when he was playing peewee football. There are questions about Shadeur being able to play outside a system where his dad is in charge. Teams also question if his dad can stay silent. Shadeur wasn’t going to be a opening day starter and teams have to question will Deion and his massive following stay quiet if the starter plays poorly with Shadeur as the backup or will it cause a QB controversy. Teams also had to question would Shadeur’s own ego allow him to be quiet if he was not the star.
I don’t think he was ever a first-round talent. If he would have been in last year’s draft, there is no question that he would have been in the third or fourth round and the ‘fall’ would not have been a big deal. If he would have been in next year’s draft, he would have been in the third or fourth round and the ‘fall’ would not have been a big deal. This year had a very unimpressive QB class.
I think that the talent evaluators, especially Mel Kiper, are ignorant. Mel Kiper has been wrong more than he has been correct. Shadeur was not a first round talent and was not the best QB on the board (he also was no way in hell the best athlete or prospect in the draft). Brock Purdy was not a seventh-round talent. I had Shadeur going in the mid-to-late fourth. I had Purdy going mid-fourth to mid-fifth. I also said that Kenny Pickett would be selected by the Steelers but he would be selected too early because he wasn’t that good (I was correct). I’m not saying I am always correct. I thought Mason Rudolph would be better than Baker Mayfield and I thought that Jalen Hurts would not be that good. I did say that the Browns (I am a Browns fan) should have taken Josh Allen and that the Packers should not have taken Jorden Love (Love was a good fit, but they were in win-now mode and they needed help with offensive skill positions). I thought Mac Jones was not a starter and that Mitch Trubisky, while a nice person (I’ve met him and saw him play in high school), should not have been picked by the Bears as high as he was (part of that is that Chicago is where QB careers go to die - and I’m a fan of the Browns who do the same thing frequently).

Makes sense. The interview stuff is pretty wild. Clearly had some bad guidance.
To draft Shedeur is to also draft Deion and the circus. Some teams just don’t want that, unless they feel there is transformational talent that comes along with it. Otherwise they won’t bother with it. Clearly they didn’t rate him high enough to be worth all of that extra noise.
