The competition was heading in this directions with clubs funding their own academy’s, until the afl revoked their access. Which innturn made it pointless for the clubs to invest in.
Yeah the staff and parents need to start pressuring the principals at the schools. It only gets blocked via fear of the afl growing even more. Look at the intentional blocking of the Olympic stadium up there by Coates and his rugby league mates, that shows the extent they’ll go to, to block afl progress in Brisbane.
On the general thread discussion, i do believe the academies are a good thing, but i have no doubt at all that the afl like them more because it guarantees the 4 northern clubs will practically never bottom out and will always be up and around finals contention.
Not sure that will happen. Just feels like it now because there’s an abnormally large amount of studs. GC really haven’t had any studs come through until this year. Lion’s no one of the like of Harris Andrew for a while.
We had a lad drafted a few years ago, he would have loved to have gone interstate instead of the Lions. Wanted that experience. Not every kid will hang around at their academy club forever.
Careful what we wish for, be fare enough if these got cancelled for the Northern clubs to say well start sharing ANZAC Day etc
by what documented standards/processes/laws is a sporting competition supposed to be run?
Great to see the best young team in the AFL (GC Suns) will get another top 5 draft pick Leo Lombard through the draft this year. But don’t worry there is no issue apparently. LOL
Didnt they change the rules straight after him?
Made it a points thing. So instead of just using that teams first they can then trade their first for a bunch of late points and use that. Virtually made it easier for them
We don’t have the same for our academy I take it?
Can’t get anyone in top 40. So if they are good we do not get haha
Right.
Ironically it was Brisbane who were dicked a f/s through Sydney’s academy(Blakey).
Heeney apparently would have played rugby league if the swans academy didn’t exist(although it can exist with that same outside 40 rule)
That’s the line they love to push about Heeney. Maybe right if there was no academy but still should be able to go anywhere on draft night.
Did you know they’re in the top 8, because they beat us?
I don’t have the internet so can’t see ladder
I think with the absolute bounty of father sons the brisbane academy rules need to be the same as everyone else. With the ashcrofts and fletcher their entitled talent is ridiculous.
Same with the swans.
Gold coast - i think they will always struggle to hold onto players.
I think a lot of people have moved up to GC now it’s actually going to produce a lot of footy talent
I think its been ridiculous for years that Sydney receive any concessions and to a lesser extent Brisbane.
Brisbane went through a phase of losing players, but plenty of clubs do.
Perhaps they could bring in a rule if your club has attracted a free agent in the past 3 years or attracted first round father sons that your club has to abide by the 40 rule. Otherwise you can match bid wherever.
Then give the cellar dwellar clubs soft cap relief on their academies.
Id figure say a North Melbourne academy gun would be much more likely to stay with them.
But they have buckleys of attracting a free agent.
Correct mate. These clubs are now destination clubs so are not only getting the best kids for cheap, they’re taking away quality players from other clubs without academies
