It’s a church. Can be rebuilt.

Meanwhile the Great Barrier Reef will be dead in our lifetime.

Good call by me.

Spire was apparently only built in the past Century or so, and was widely pilloried when installed, and supposedly was still not really pleasing to many, … and they have saved a fair bit of the older bits, and can rebuild the rest.

Was also pretty shoddily built and a lot of recent repairs (past 80 years or so) to the whole thing were done poorly and on the cheap, to the extent of replacing stone with Timber done up to look like stone.

So all is not lost and the rebuild will ultimately have it better than it has been in a hell of a long time.

Heaps of building were destroyed in WW11 and then rebuilt. It’s been done.

Dresden is being rebuilt exactly as it was.

And I think Cologne Cathedral was rebuilt.

That was my first thought.

Shoddily built buildings don’t tend to stand for 850 years!

The Spire.

Which was also built in the 19th century, not exactly yesterday!

It seems as though it’s the recent restoration that’s made it go up

Yes that is correct, they skimped for years on repairs and now calling on the World/AFL to help them rebuild, it will be now called Notre Carlton Dame, true story!

Except the last sentence .

Cologne Cathedral suffered (comparatively) little damage during WWII

Apparently the Allies used it spires as a navigation point

Here’s a pic from 1944

Aachen ( burial place of Charlemagne) suffered more damage. Coventry was destroyed - the shell remains with a modern church next to it.
In France and Belgium churches are a huge drain on State finances - a legacy of Napoleon’s Concordat with the Vatican, under which the State owns the churches and is responsible for their maintenance.

Apparently a bunch of French billionaires have committed half a billion dollars to rebuild it.

QE2 and the Brits might be a bit miffed about the significance of Notre Dame at the international level. When Windsor Castle went up in flames the then PM Major said that the Government would fit the bill, but such was the public reaction that she decided to pay for it. Never a question of the old Empire chipping in, but we have here a bipartisanship view that Australians could contribute to rebuilding Notre Dame.

I reckon perhaps they should leave it as a burnt out hulk, indicative of the Roman Catholic Church and all it professes and protects"

Catholic Church has more than enough gold bullion to rebuild Notre Dame if they wanted to
