Our Tall Forward Dilemma

Guys this is really playing on my mind and the fact we have rushed the resigning - with very little form evidence for both Jones and Edwards. Now we have recruited 3 talls in the pre season draft this adds an extra layer of complexity. But we could end up with a serious list imbalance.

How do we fit all these forwards on our list?
Wright
Caddy
Jones
McMahon
May
Gerryn
Langford
Edwards

Throw in Draper, Bryan and Blakki as ruck / fwd options as well as Vigo. We probably need to draft at least one key back as well.

Based on the earlier signings of two players with non proven qualities, it’s looking more and more likely Draper and potentially Langford make way.

Thoughts?

Sadly i reckon Mcmahon will get delisted. Even though i reckon he offers more than jones and edwards. We rushed those signings.

I’ve been banging on about this - and it’s the first mark against Rosa’s name for mine (which is fine, no one is perfect!)

May has shown enough and has 18 months anyway. I agree that McMahon will likely be the one to (unfortunately) make way despite good VFL form. Langford seeking a move would be perfect.

Jones and Edwards were blunders.

Wright - trade
Caddy - lifetime contract
Jones - delist and payout
McMahon - offer 1yr
May - contracted for 2026
Gerryn - contracted for 2026
Langford - Trade
Edwards - keep
Draper - let go
Bryan - 2 year deal (probs need longer to keep him)
Vigo - 2 year deal
Blakiston - no idea as he hasnt played a single game in the ruck yet
Goldy - 1 year deal to get him to 350 as the sub

I think we had to resign Edwards. He moved his life to come over here and didn’t put a foot wrong.

Jones 2 year deal is confusing. I’ve often wondered if we could try him at half back maybe?

Gut feel is that one of Draper/ Bryan will go at years end, most likely Draper. Goldie should retire with Vigo, Wright and Gerryn to share ruck duties.

Id love to see McMahon get another year, but probably only happens if Langford leaves which feels unlikely.

Worth baring in mind that the list will transition alot this year. Shiel, Davey, Menzie, possibly Hobbs, possibly Lav.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Rosa is more aggressive with moving players on. He’ll want to shape this list a lot more.

Bring back Jaidyn Hunter

Disagree with this. Edwards is a 25 year old medium forward. He needed to make every post a winner to get another year and sadly did his ACL. Was an easy delist for mine.

Surely it means that we don’t have to focus on that area at the draft, meaning we can focus on other areas such as small forward, classy HB, A-grade mid

This. 2MP is 29 next year and, whilst he does have some good footy left, I think he offers more to us on the trade table than he does on the park in the medium-long term. Clubs like Collingwood and Hawthorn (even Melbourne) may be interested in him as they need a tall forward.

On his own you wouldn’t say he’d be worth a 1st, but if we are able to package up either one or two of our 2nd round picks, we would be able to improve our draft hand either this year, or even better - next year.

The best fwd/2nd ruck in the AFL currently

what’s Mitch Brown up to? he’s probably super busy with EOFY, but we need that man’s dead eye goal drilling ability.

I think we did the right thing by him. I also think he might be happy to stay in WA and play for WC or Freo. We could offer a trade to them to take over his existing base rate contract in return for virtually nothing. Same result as delisting but with the player looked after.
Freo probably not interested (Treacy, Amiss, Voss) but WC might well be.

Jones plays wing, not forward

Exactly.

Trade him now whilst he still has some value and let him experience some success in his career.

I disagree with both signings. But the Edwards one is a bit easier to stomach than Jones.

We know what we have with Jones. And he hasnt shown anything for years now. Where as least Edwards was signed on untapped potential.

Weve managed to better deal ourselves with the talent coming in through the mid season draft. Rosa wouldnt have ever conceived the amount of LTI’s we ended up getting, but good lord… Imagine if he had held off on those signings until later in the year. We would be sitting very comfortably at the moment with our cap management.

My hope is that the Jones deal was signed so early because hes agreed to stay on minimum chips. So even delisting him for this year or next doesnt end up stinging too hard. Thats what i would think if that deal was made by a more competent club anyway…

Brad loves Jones i have him as his second biggest teachers pet behind Perkins, i think that’s the reason he got signed, no different to when menzie surprisingly got a new contract, it would more be who the coach wants to keep in these situations wouldn’t it?

I don’t think Edwards will make it, he looked off the pace at afl level, but a year in the gym building some strength might help him. At the time it felt like the nice thing to do, but the 198cm McMahon I’d take over him in a heartbeat, despite no afl exposure. It will be really annoying if McMahon is the one that gets the chop, as i think he has more potential than most of the others.

The others are justifiable, but the Jones re-signing baffles me.

At the very most he gets a year, but to date he’s done absolutely nothing to justify an extension.

The jones resigning is just like the guelfi two year deal neither were needed or backed by form and both are injury plagued

Good point. As a future matter of strategic list policy l would like to see re-signings held off until after the MSD. That way we limit the potential financial burden derived from players geting signed, then injured.
