Can someone provide some advice here?
I’m a Builder, and I’m looking for a camera to take interior and exterior shots of my projects. Will need to be able to capture tight spaces (eg. bathrooms), bigger spaces (eg. living rooms) and wider exterior shots (eg. landscaped areas and facades). The photos will end up on my website with 1000x600 pixels typical.
I’ve had a look and am overwhelmed by options and have no idea what to spend before getting diminishing returns. Any advice much appreciated!
I do miss the beautiful autumn colours up in Qld.
I’m deep down the rabbit hole researching what camera to get. The Canon R7 looks a likely candidate. It’s a mirrorless crop sensor camera. Does anyone have experience with this camera and can recommend or otherwise?
from your previous post, I’d have one concern about the crop sensor R7. ergo - It’s a crop sensor. For tight spaces, bathrooms etc I’m not really up to speed on what options the R mount has for true wide angle lenses. And then the crop sensor will make them even less wide. On the plus side, Sigma sound like they’ve finally been given permission to build canon mount lenses, so that might help. Their little 16mm/1.4 (24mm on the crop) is a great lens but 24mm may not be wide enough for what you want. Almost certainly not.
Wide angle architectural shots are inherently demanding on gear and technique / processing because even the rectilinear lenses introduce lots of distortion and not-straight verticals really quickly.
As an allround camera, the R7 has a lot going for it. Great autofocusing etc. But from memory it lacks stabilisation , which might also be handy for indoor , lowish light shots.
Because you have some specific, targeted use case requirements in mind, maybe start by working out exactly what focal lengths you think you’ll require for that use case ( express them in 35mm format field of view for a baseline), then see what lenses are available in that equivalency in whatever camera body you are looking at.
edit -I could probably loan you a camera and 16mm equivalent lens just to try at work for a few days to get a handle on what the wide focal lengths actually look like.

Thanks so much for this information and the offer. I’ve got a really old DSLR that has given me some idea on focal length, but my iPhone Pro 12 takes better snaps than that!
For bathrooms an 18mm lense should suffice, and the R7 has a few lenses that would work. There’s also an 10-18mm lense I could get if needed, but I think small rooms can look a bit odd at that focal length. Is that the pincushion effect? They do have image stabilisation too, but I expect I’ll be using a tripod anyway for every shot.
The only reason why I’m looking at crop sensor is full frame cameras start to get really pricey! I’m also probably not skilled enough to get the benefits from a top end camera.
There’s obviously a tonne of factors to feed into a decision, but for a general use camera , in some ways you might be better with something like the (cheaper) full frame Nikon Z5 . The issue is that FF lenses of most brands are bigger and more expensive than aps-c lenses .
Its very difficult to provide hard and fast rules on any of this though. I still mainly use micro four thirds for various reasons despite clear IQ compromises, and tbh they might do what you’re looking for at much reduced size and weight.
Funny that you mention this but I’ve found someone selling a Z5 with low shutter count at a very good price. Waiting for their response to my message. It’s a fair bit cheaper than the new R7 I was looking at, includes a lense and is full frame. There’s also better battery life and dual card slots. Will take it if it hasn’t been sold yet.

It’s the older D750 sensor but it’s still a fine imaging tool and other than cutting edge auto focus I think it’s a cracker. And the 50mm/1.8 prime is optically brilliant.
That is really one of your best Sal…that is magnificent.

Beautiful Sal. Is it a Gerygone?
That’s not a bee!
Also nice shot Looks like you either have got yourself a big lens or the bird was very patient with you to get up close.
Finally got a good clear night tonight. New sky to shoot, new temperatures, new 2x lens extender!
25 x 300 second stack. 1200mm. F11. 6400 iso.
Meet M83 galaxy also known as the Southern Pinwheel. A mere 15 million light years away, 55,000 light years across. For reference all other photos so far have been from within our own Milky Way. For reference, the Horsehead nebula is 1,500 light years away.
Focus not spot on and for some reason wasn’t holding the focus properly in manual mode. Need to look this up to see what’s going on.
Also with it being much colder now I think my portable battery died earlier cause the heater around the lens had to work harder. Only got about 4 hours where in summer I was getting 8 hours. Hmmm…

consider also that batteries drain faster in cold weather for an equivalent load.

As it was 15 million years ago…far out, the thought of that is amazing.
