Places you visited as a child

The Eltham roller rink was as cool as it gets.
If you didn't have your birthday party there then you were a loser.

I think there is still one in sunshine.
There's definitely still a few around. Scoresby and Bayswater for starters. Interesting places, to say the least, lol. I wrote an article on an expedition to one a few years ago ( for a motorcycle magazine website of all things!), they are like a time machine back to Bogan Australia.

Would explain why there is still one in Laverton. Only went there once from memory, got bored of going in circles the whole time.

Wave Rock in WA.

It was AWESOME.  From memory.

The whispering wall in SA, somewhere. It's in the middle of nowhere, so that rules it down to anywhere within SA.

Near the Barossa maybe?

Anyway, it's... weird.

For about 4 minutes

Yes somewhere up in the hills. On a clear day you can hear a watch ticking from one side of the weir to the other. l was taken there in 1968 as part of school exchange program. The said it had been studied extensively and that it was the only such place in the world like it, but there is a place in China has similar acoustic qualities, in Beijing IIRC.

There weren't a lot of attractions out on the veldt in South Africa to visit....

1978. The old man said he'd give me ten dollars if I could climb to the top. While he was distracted I buggered off to the side where the lip of the rock wasn't curled over and climbed it, ran back along the top and did they old 'Hey Dad! Look at me, Dad! Look!'
He wasn't happy about the ten bucks. Mum made him give it to me.

When I was about 8 my Dad said he'd give me ten bucks if I could eat a tablespoon of hot english mustard.  I had the spoon loaded up ready to go until Mum asked my Dad if he'd do it, he said "I wouldn't do it for a thousand".

When me and my brother where nippers our old man offered the same if we could untangle a fishing line found on the beach. seriously tangled.

the ten dollars more than adequately covered the new line we bought at the bait shop.

So you untangled the fishing line, won the ten dollars, THEN used the ten dollars to buy new fishing line?

nah bought the line for bugger all and played cricket on the beach until he came back.

the 10 bucks was blown on ice cream, wagon wheels, fizzy raspberry, big bosses, wiz fizz, mixed lollies, new line expenses and the rest kept.

10 dollars was a lot of money in those days...

Geez, you guys must have had tough childhoods.

Highlights of mine would have been Disneyland, Kennedy Space Centre, Yosemite National Park, Grand Canyon.

And coming from NSW family holidays were usually to places like Forster or Stockton, visiting family out in Forbes (central plains), or camping in State Forests.

I was in the scouts too so got to go on trips to the snow/parliament house/Blue Mountains, and a lot of camping places like Riverwood Downs, Bundabah Bush Camp, Tiona, Glenrock Lagoon. Even went to a Jamboree (11 day camp) in Ballarat in 1992 which was pretty awesome for a 14yo kid. Got to go on day trips to Melbourne & Sovereign Hill etc.

Prolly took it all for granted too.

I hated Cubs and then, when I was old enough, I hated Scouts.

the detention room

I hated Cubs and then, when I was old enough, I hated Scouts.

Other than the uniform, cubs & scouts was awesome*.

*Girls were allowed to join during my time

And they both paled into insignificance when compared to Venturers. Randy 14-18 y.o. boys and girls, camping out under the stars with minimal supervision.I worked hard for my Queen's Scout award, but even harder on putting moves on the girls from various troops.
