Would Al Jolson performances be considered a put down? He’s the only blackface entertainer I’ve really seen any footage of & I don’t recall it coming across as mocking - I just never understood why he was painted black. It didn’t seem to add anything to the performance so I assumed it was a generational thing i didn’t get. Is he personally considered a racist now (yes I know he died 68 years ago)?
Ok but if, purely as a hypothetical example, it turns out the race pay gap sees Asian Australians earning way more than white Australians. Not even generally, but in specific specialised fields.
Right.
I’ll throw it out there there’s a lot of people working on student/tourist visas, and they’re working in particular industries and settings, and they’re probably not being paid particularly well.
Any of those hand car washes where there’s about 2 dozen people milling around waiting for a $15 car wash. The rorts uncovered in the 7/11 court case. Servos in general.
It’s an immigration issue, not a wages issue as such, but still.
It’s another shitstorm, but in today’s society, I would make taking or advertising ‘cash only’ illegal. There is no other reason other than tax avoidance, which is illegal. Really ■■■■■■ me off. Like a lot of things do.
Which given most only have two children, I kind of allowed for with three years.
Look, we have a 45 year working life. Consider how old the average person is who makes partner. Then explain to me how a system that can’t handle a few years out for 50% of employees without shutting most out is fair.
Serious? You don’t know who Al Jolson is? The Jazz Singer ring any bells - although not technically correct its often referred to as the 1st talkie, what about Mammy, Swanee?? I assumed people familiar with blackface would have known its most famous ever exponent.
Anyways, I guess this is a chance for you to read up on him. At the time many considered his work as promoting black culture & paving the way for more black performers to get into showbiz. Like Elvis, he was said to have introduced parts of black music & dance to a white audience that might not otherwise have been exposed to it. He was said to have personally campaigned for civil rights & not considered racist at all in his lifetime but ultimately he was famous for blackface so I’m not sure how he is now viewed,
