I want us to go through a proper process and then pick who I want

(James Hird handover to James Kelly with assistants including Pendlebury, Bartel and one of Hinkley/Longmire)

Yeah he could be a funny bloke and I reckon he has got good potential, I just rate the Hawks coaching production system better than Geelong’s for some reason.

I think it’s maybe because the Hawks have been crap, then good, crap, then good again under new coaches. Coaches that have taken big risks with the list and implemented innovative game styles.

Geelong on the other hand are kinda more like Sydney, where the culture is so strong they’ve stayed at the top and haven’t really had to cull or reinvent themselves again from the bottom up, for the past 20 years.

Also looking back at history, most of the flag and great coaches have come out of the Hawks system originally. You’ve got Bevo, Hardwick, Simpson, Fagan and now Mitchell looking likely. They seem to regularly set the trends in new innovative tactics and game style.

That is true clarkson has produced good coaches.

I dont fully understand the Mcveigh love though

As long as Hird draws breath, there will be a vocal minority/silent majority who would love nothing more than him coming back to coach us and fulfill the redemptive arc. This drum beat echoes even stronger now that Hird is criticising our ‘system’ and analysing player performances from afar.

Part of me would love nothing more than seeing Hirdy back in the coaches box, but another part is too deeply scarred by the failure of his last tenure and is totally against that prospect.

Okay fine, bring back Hird…

We need a motivator/man manager who will get these players wanting to run through brick walls for him as much as someone with real tactical acumen. I’ve said it before, we need the AFL’s equivalent of Jurgen Klopp. Someone who will put his heart and soul into the job, into the club, and by force of personality connect with these players on an emotional level. Our last 3 appointments the coaches have had the emotional properties of an iceberg lettuce.

Who would be the best defensive minded assistant in the league.

That would be the person we need

Worstfold,Rutten,Brad

All failed after they said they would fix the defense.

I for one look forward to our long and far reaching process which concludes the best candidate was one we already had on-staff.

That’s how we roll, right?

What Essendon should do is run its process, settle on the preferred candidate, then appoint the guy that is 100% diametrically opposed to that preferred candidate.

Getting somebody hungry out of Fegan’s coaching would be a good place to look.

The past does not equal the future

Andrew Welsh appoints himself as coach.

McVeigh I’m talking of as only an option if we wanna go the Essendon boys club Hird route. He is the most qualified of the 3 when including Solomon and Hird. He has worked in development (Giants academy, swans academy, Allies championship winning coach), coached multiple of his own sides and is working under a successful swans system. He has also been promoted internally a couple of times so must have impress the senior coaches (Cameron and Longmire). I also find him a pretty impressive speaker and he has a tough edge to him.

On your other question who is the best defensive coach, that would be Troy Chaplin I think, who I also like as a smoky.

I’m all for getting the best defensive coach in, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they have to be senior coach. If we run a full and thorough process and he ends up being the standout candidate, by all means appoint him. I want the best man for the job, that wants the job and will put his heart and soul into it. I want a footy nut who lives and breathes the game and every waking moment he has the Essendon Football Club at the forefront of his mind.
