Practice matches vs Bulldogs @ The Hangar - 23 Feb 2022 - AFL @ 3pm + VFL @ 5:45pm

What annoys me about kayo is that 24 after the game they reduce the bit rate of the replay making it unwatchable with clearly visible stutter.

A mix of the streaming platforms costs less and gives far greater range than keeping Foxtel. Kayo is great, especially for $15 per month being a Telstra customer. I was with Foxtel for 15-20 years up until a couple of years ago, haven’t missed it for 1 minute. Prob pay $50-60 in total but we watch ten times the stuff than we did with Foxtel.

Circa 1995 at Princess Park when & where we hosted St.Kilda.

The best wet weather performance I have ever seen by any team, let alone by Essendon.,

Agreed. Probably the same people that spend $6 every morning for their coffee too…

Would you be in favour of bringing in a preseason cup

I remember getting excited for preseason as a kid, and in 1993 used the fosters premiership photo from magazine as book cover for school that year.

Leave out the Grand finalists due to delayed preseason and start the matches first week of February.
Knockout matches every week
Grand final played in home teams stadium of choice.

When other clubs are knocked out they are just playing practice matches.

Yeah agree the mrs has amazon and netflix and all that too, but I’m a bit old school in that I like the ease of having a tv controller and recording shows off foxtel and FTA that I can then just fast forward through the adds when i watch them (more FTA with the adds). Also I am getting use to it now but I hated streaming initially as the quality didn’t seem as good and it could get interrupted occasionally. Do any of the newer streaming companies have news (fox, CNN, Al jazeera) and documentaries (History channel etc), if there is one out there that just does that I’m all for it, but there are almost too many options now so sheer laziness and convenience has left me with foxtel.

Was it the Premiership Cup or the subliminal Fosters advertising that piqued your interest as a young tacker?

Funnily enough I was on the phone to Foxtel this morning to tell them to jam it and I’ll switch to Kayo and binge, they told me due to the interest that it should be on Foxtel but I would t hold my breath on that

Fetch tv buy the Mighty (can record shows) or mini outright or through some carriers subscribe to all the channels for $20mth or $6 for individual packs you descibed

I remember as a kid that the ‘night final’ was a thing… and preseason didn’t mean too much… but it was seen as a valid thing to watch and to win. Then it suddenly went downhill quick. I don’t know which came first… but the low point became those 20 minute round robin things one year… and when FC won it… well I think that was the end.

I think you either extend the season OR bring back the pre-season. I always thought you could have attached premiership points to it… like not enough that it was critical but enough that it made it worthwhile for clubs to actually give a toss. So go back to it being a ‘knock out’ competition played over four weeks. Previous years GF teams are excluded. Award 4 points for the winner. 2 pts for the Runner Up and 1 point to the losing Semi Finalists. So there is an incentive to win… but not enough that you would automatically be disadvantaged for not winning.

Imagine as the season got closer to finals and the 1 point a team earned in pre-season is suddenly the deciding factor… I think it would add a nice element AND give us something to watch in February.

That would be my plan anyway.

different (ie waaaaaay more expensive) onsite tech needed for broadcasting vs streaming

I held onto it for the recording stuff also, but if your internet is decent enough (my NBN still drops occasionally but is pretty decent) then streaming is all you will need. I was just like you though so I get it.

And yes, too many options with streaming. Not sure about the news and history stuff sorry, hopefully something out there for you though if you decide to switch over.

I always loved the preseason stuff too, used to love getting along to games. Seeing the All-Star weekend in NBA work so well every year, and the NRL State of Origin, wish we could have something else also.

Was it the 2000 Ansett or Fosters or Lightning Cup game where Jason Johnson laid out Blakey in the opening minutes, and the sound could be heard from level 3 in the southern stand? That moment set the tone for what laid ahead.

I remember going to a lot of them as a kid/teen in the late 80’s/90’s.

Trouble is, the players were withdrawing so it became less interesting to watch.

Long & Bewick were both great wet weather players & killed it that day
