Pre-season game v Geelong Saturday 6th march 2021 7.10PM @ GMHBA

So Wright should never play again and Zaka should be given games. Got it

ill be relally angry if zaka is named against hawks

Wright had 12 touches, took 4 contested marks (I think they were all against Blicavs) and probably should have kicked 3 goals. I thought he provided a good contest as well.

I think we can give him a week or two considering the other options.

I just finished watching the game.

The effort was there, the skills were not. Our skills are bottom 3 in the comp which is where we will end up.

I’m 2MP’s biggest critic, but he was ok. He competed and brought the ball to ground. If he plays like this every week, he will win me over.

I was dreading a 15 goal belting. Bunch of kids, a number of whom have yet to play VFL/WAFL/SANFL Tier 2 stuff let alone AFL, playing alongside teammates they’d only just introduced themselves to a few weeks earlier. Up against a well-coached, seasoned team packed with talent that many people have as their premiership favourite, on their home turf. Most of our boys had never even set foot on Kardinia Park. And what did we get? Four quarters of solid effort, plenty from the kids, plenty from the imports, and very nearly a win. If you’re not rapt with that then I feel sorry for you. Bring on 2021, we all know it’ll be a roller coaster but I’m on board with Truck and these boys. We might be building something here.

Yeah that’s what I mean. He didn’t dominate, but he was to fine. If he can play like that every week he deserves a spot.

WATSON AND COONEY’S POSITIVE TAKEAWAYS FROM ESSENDON’S PRE-SEASON MATCH

BY ALEX ZAIA 26 MINUTES AGO

Tim Watson was impressed by Essendon’s collective pressing in their encouraging AAMI Community Series outing against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.

The Bombers dominated the inside 50 count but went down by seven points on Saturday night due to some inaccurate goalkicking.

Veteran bookend Cale Hooker kicked four goals while recruits Peter Wright and Nick Hind also performed well.

But it was Essendon’s work without the ball that caught Watson’s attention.

“The players were pushing up high and quickly to put pressure on the opposition,” the Bombers great told SEN Breakfast .

“Richmond do this better than anybody, they lose the ball, and then they win it back really quickly, and Essendon were showing signs of getting onto the Geelong team quickly after they had lost possession of the ball.

“That requires everybody to be on the same page because you have to leave your man at some point and you’ve got to have the confidence to do that and know that somebody is going to push in behind you and fill that space.

“For me, that means they’ve done a lot of work on that style of football that they haven’t been particularly good at.”

Former Bomber Adam Cooney liked the “bold” ball movement from Ben Rutten’s side in the narrow loss to the Cats.

“I was really impressed. They should have won that game by four or five goals,” Cooney told SEN’s Dwayne’s World .

“They had a mountain of opportunities inside 50 – at one stage they were +20 inside 50s – it was just that last kick going in.

“I think Bombers supporters should be really excited.

“I know it’s only a small sample size, but coming up against a good team in Geelong, I thought the way they moved the footy was pretty bold.

“They actually cut up the Cats through the middle of the ground at times.”

Essendon face rivals Hawthorn in Round 1 at Marvel Stadium on March 20.

What is this fiction you talk about?

Haha I thought the exact same thing… ‘a what?’

They probably left / switched off with 5 mins to go and missed Hookers last goal.

Yeah his back is screwed. Let’s hope he can manage it for the majority the year.

During the game I noticed Tippa taking a free, and they put some tall slow guy on the mark.
I was a bit surprised that Tippa took the kick, and kicked over his head.
As I see it, as long as the player taking the kick stays on his line, the player on the mark cannot move or its 50.
That means a player can run right up to him, within say, 2 metres, then step around him. That would be especially good if there was clear space behind the player on the mark.

Have we seen a player do that yet?

Question - why did we play so well agaisnt the cats vs carlton? did anyone watch the carlton game? were we missing players?
was our performance ovverated?

What we saw on the weekend was Geelong players (Cameron’s shot on goal springs to mind) running at an angle and finishing up a metre or so to the side of the mark, and kicking from almost level with the mark. And because the umps wouldn’t call “play-on” as they weren’t too far off their line, the guy on the mark couldn’t move.

So Cameron effectively pinched about 2-3m on a shot, which may have absolutely made a difference.
