Preseason Training 11/11/24 (and onwards till someone creates a new thread)

This is more like it many on here will be happy

Love the vision thanks mate, it’s awesome to be able to see stuff like that for supporters like myself who don’t live in Melbourne or can’t get to them.
One thing that drives me mad and we do it so often in game is video 1862 someone kicks to Martin at half back and that person points out the next kick to Hoare, Martin looks and then doesn’t use it holds up the play and then kicks to a contest where it spills out.
I don’t know if he didn’t take it because Hoare is the new guy and doesn’t trust him yet or if he thinks he can pick off some miracle kick instead but either way the coaches need to get on it

How any who thinks a team who stunk
It up June through Aug is going to have amazing touch in Dec, when they’ve only had ball in hand for 2-4 weeks is beyond me.

The pleasing thing is they are working on plays prior to Xmas, with a full 2 months to improve in the new year.

We aren’t winning finals in 2025.

BDB will be at the club in 2026 provided we win 10 odd games and show some promise to some metrics.

We’ll have 2 more first rounders next year, perhaps 3 if Draper goes and a ■■■■ load of cash.

Think we’re tracking well to regenerate the club, set the right standards and fire for top 4 in 2027. If Brad fails on field by then the best part should be that whoever comes in is not starting anywhere near scratch

Thats fine but it’s the intensity and urgency you want to see.

We don’t expect silk in December but would hope to see them drilling down on a system that is somewhat intuitive to replicate in season when the real heat comes at them.

Most of the highlights posted (again shout-out to nickers and others) seem to suggest the messaging is still kick it sideways or rely on a 50-50 kick down the line.

The 50-50 could just be the result of poor execution this time of year but none of the successful teams rely on pin point 40 metre kicks to a contest yet we still see plenty of them in our match sim.

I hope I’m wrong and there were plenty of handballs through the press similar to the drills noted in the training reports but we don’t appear to be drumming it in.

For the eternally optimistic among us maybe our defensive press is just too good :sunglasses:

personally i don’t understand excusing poor disposal in december. these guys are professional athletes who have been kicking a footy their whole lives. they should be able to pick up a ball and execute their skills whatever the time of year is.

i understand wind can impact disposal but December shouldn’t.

if they can’t execute skills with the heat off in december they’ll never execute well at crunch time

Happens every year and peeps still excuse it coz of conditions, oh it’s december it’s not going to be perfect. Yet when games come around we see the same ■■■■. Not encouraging to hear we’re still bombing the ball in long

On another note, thanks to the training watchers for the fantastic videos and reports!

What do you mean, Drapes is making terrible decisions and kicking is still shyte, McGrath turning it over and lack of two way run, what more real life match sim could you get!

For me, there is plenty of time in season to go all doom and gloom.

Yes skills weren’t the best and intensity not super high but it’s December and last time I checked our issues are season fade outs not starts.

I’ll be judging skills, game plan and intensity closer to Feb, rather focus on individuals at this stage.

But each to their own. Great to have all opinions.

Yep Martin did a lot really well today and would’ve had a lot of the pill but a few too many of those more ambitious kicks didn’t come off.

There’s a reason we have 7 18 year olds new on our list. It’s because a large potion of our boys don’t have the required skill to be successful AFL players.

How has anyone expected that to change from
August to December?

we gave long terms deals to butchers like Parish & McGrath who are supposed to be setting the standards for the kids.

Our cult hero in Draper can barely drop the ball on his foot.

We used pick #5 and have spent 24 months re educating him on the fundamentals of the game FFS.

It’s not going to all of a sudden change in the short term, added their touch is worse when many have been overseas ■■■■■■■ around for the past 4-8 weeks.

Rosa has his work cut of for him over the next 3-5 years to make certain it doesn’t happen again.

When you draft players who lack composure, you’re in for a lot of pain thinking that’s going to shift.

McKay’s hand and foot skills are horrible.

Gresham is softer than a maccas $0.50 cone left on the steps of 13th beach between Jan & Feb and Disco gave him 4 years FFS (don’t
Come at me with your stats on his goal assists. He sucks).

Wright closes his eyes when attempting to mark.

We’ve kept potato’s like ol Fortnite who ■■■■ knows what reason who’s a horrible kick

Our 3 top 10 picks from 4 years ago are likely busts

Our best young players other than Caddy were SSP and Mid year picks.

Lower your expectations and be more realistic and you’ll be less likely to have an aneurysm.

I’d love to be proven wrong but c’mon peeps, we’ve got a long ways to go, but I think we’re slowing heading in the right direction and excited about a lot of the kids, but it’s only December.

It will be the Caddy’s, Kako’s, Caldwells, Martin’s, Durhams, Saads, Nguyens, Brians and who take us forward.

If Reid gets fit and Fedora can stop looking at himself in the mirror, who knows.

But be realistic. it’s a few weeks out from Xmas, hot & windy as ■■■■ and all of a sudden you’re expecting players who proven to be inconsistent players who lack skills, to be silk.

Why is Setterfield on the list.

You won’t have to worry about that because you’ve just posted yours here

Unlike this post.

Can’t argue with most of your observations but I can’t cop just accepting mediocrity from a coaching and a development point of view.

Control the controllable. If we have a poorly skilled team don’t just train a game plan reminiscent of under 15’s circle work.

Gets repeated ad nauseam but only perfect practice makes perfect. If you spend preseason just going through the motions then no wonder we suck at developing elite players.
