We’ll be slow out of the blocks and be 4gls down at Q1 which will roll in to an 8-10 goal loss.

Brad will say that it’s a good hit out for our young group and that there were lots of positives to take from it.

Being only capable of scoring 9 or 10 goals a game won’t enable Essendon to win many matches.

Hawks in a canter.

Car crash coming. Too many reasons to list.

How many out-the-back goals Hawks small forward score?

Draw level with them in f50 entries and go down by 8+

Essendon home game but we no longer have Fujitsu as a sponsor.

No FUJITSU FLAME at 3/4 time?!?! We’re COOKED.

If Kako is out then you have to play Gresham.

Debuts for Sharpe, Farrow and El Achkar will be my main enjoyment. Also if Reid can return to last seasons form before injury and Caddy can hit his best form from last year.

A bonus will be if we get improvement from the Stkilda game from McKay, Parish, Caldwell, Durham and Roberts who were a bit scrappy.

As much as I get a glimmer of hope in Jan & Feb, long after the misery of June through to about October each year, the realist in me has us losing by anywhere between 6 and 12 goals.

We lack class in our midfield and our forward line is dysfunctional.

Ahh the end of preseason Joe and optimism met with the reality that we have to play other teams.

I actually agree. You cant go into a game with ONE small forward, on debut, who’s fitness isnt there

One of guelfi or gresham will play imo. They are depth players for this exact type of scenario

Id rather a dead house plant over gresham

If Gresham decides that he wants to show up, then he can still contribute. The problem is that he’s too often not switched on / cruising. He’d want to make the most of his opportunity if it comes as he’s clearly already been overtaken by Kako / Huss.

We can win this game IF we are willing to play a strong strategy of not allowing Hawthorn space in their forward line. They have a weak midfield & their backline is vulnerable but they rely on pace & space forward of the ball to get easy goals. IF we let them draw our defenders outside D50 they will murder us for speed going back to goal & players like Watson, Ginnivan & Butler will feast. Back our midfield to beat them man for man & maintain a defensive structure & we can make it hard enough for them to score to keep them under 12 goals. We can’t outscore them in a shootout.

Optimism is high this time of year but Hawks have a game under their belt and their coaches will be pulling apart that game and working on their ground ball work (which Mitchell was not happy with). They’ll be desperate for a win and will smell blood. I think they’ll hit us hard and we’ll lose by loads because one thing our boys can guarantee us is a slow start from which we’ll never recover!

I think we’ll put in a better than expected performance. Hawks by 101 points. I look forward to seeing Merrett in a forward pocket and Prior used on a wing.
