His music just doesn’t speak to me at all. All that “Frankie and Joanie sitting in a diner, they’re doing it so tough” nonsense.

Quite apart from the obvious sax crimes, I’ve generally been quite ambivalent about Broooooce. But then I recall 1984-1985…

That time when we had Born In the USA and its 17 singles rammed down our throats, and the purveyors of “real music” at school held it up like it was the discovery of Christ’s foreskin. By any measure, I really disliked that album.

I did get enjoy it when he started releasing 12" remixes of singles from that album. Said “real music” fantasists had spent a lot of time shitcanning 12" versions, and watching their mental gymnastics (justifying why it was OK for Broooce but not for anyone else) was quite satisfying.

Beyond that, I doubt I could name one of his songs released since. His music just washes over me…

Edit: The faux “man of the people” schtick is more annoying than his music if I’m honest. The double-denim clad, rolled-up shirt sleeves… turn it up, man. You live in a gated 85 room gated mansion on the coast. It’s a con… He said so himself in an early interview… “People reckon they write songs to be a voice of the people, to protest, to change the world. No, they don’t… people play guitar and write songs to get laid… anyone who says otherwise is lying”…

What about Streets of Philadelphia, award winning song off the ST album? Neil Young’s song on the same album is equally good and even move moving. That album also contains the only piece of true opera l can listen to, it sends shivers down my spine every time with the sheer power of Maria Callas’ voice.

I’m I correct in believing Ol’ Boss Man never had a number 1 in the states?

“Ahhhhh, reaches back, cracks knuckles and then…”

He did, but not as you know it.
Manfred Mann’s Earth Band- Blinded by the Light.
Everything else was 2 or worse.

I love Bruce so don’t agree with your take there, but those purveyors of “real music” people really grind my gears. People like what they like, and who is anyone to tell people a certain artist or genre is not real music.

I was watching a Youtube the other day…all the Australian No 1’s of the 70s.

Suzi Q did 3 in about 12 months. Magnificent!
