I actually think we’re not as far off (being competitive again) as people think.
We do have a long long way to go when it comes to premierships. You’d be looking at a decade of hard work to get us there.
But with this group of kids, and a list manager who is strategic in how he builds culture and the list…..we’re in a much better position than we were 5 years ago.
We do need to sort out the footy department. Because it’s an utter mess. If we get the right people in, then It will turn quickly.
AFL support will have minimal impact in the grand scheme of things.
West Coast 11 wins in 4 years
Essendon had 11 wins in back to back seasons only 2 years ago. If we don’t win another game this year we would have 29 wins from our last 4 seasons
What we need to push is that we’ve lost Saad, Daniher, Draper and hopefully Merrett and Ridley all wanting out. We won’t get priority picks this year. But we should be pushing for concessions on matching bids in 2026 but most importantly 2027. Being able to get Bewick, Darwish and Rodan cheap, and thus being able to convince Rodan to choose us, would be huge.
Well the media are now onto the priority pick narrative I have been pushing from early this season we should be going to the AFL for. Thats a good start with Twomey actively canvassing that Essendon should be looking to go to the AFL asking as many clubs have done in the past.
Whether our pig headed club can park their ego aside to ask for help is another matter.
Priority picks, extra rookie spots, discounts on eligible father sons/NGAs, we should be asking for the full whack ahead of the Tasmania impacted drafts. If we could have a period of say 3 years special dispensation that will help greatly.
The AFL having an Essendon football club mired in the highest form of mediocrity for 22 years may finally have them provide the assistance the club needs.
Whether Essendon can save Essendon from itself with the blockheads running the place for 25 years is another matter.
Not quite a copy and paste job though.
Gold Coast finished 17th, 17th, then 18th. Total of 12 wins in that period.
We’ll be 11th, 15th, then 18th this year. Total of 18 wins and a draw. We actually almost reached the Suns total in one season 11 wins and 1 draw).
We’re a shoe in to get it next year if we stay bottom. Not sure we’ll get support if we start rising towards the end of that year and finish say 16th or 17th.
It’s not great but ro put in context
-North at the end of this year will probably only have 29 wins from their last 7 seasons
-Richmond will probably have 19 or 20 wins from their last 4 seasons
-West Coast will probably have 15 wins from their last 5 seasons (or 25 from their last 6 seasons)
You would think that if we were to get an assistance then those others would also get similar or more assistance
As I’ve constantly maintained, I’ll be absolutely ecstatic if we get some assistance and I hope that I’m wrong but I just don’t think it will happen in any meaningful way this year
