Request for AFL assistance in 2026

End of first round compo that’s like recving a gift that you dont really want and kinda useless

Thanks AFL it’s going to help us so much lols

It is interesting isn’t it?

This is what the AFL said when they gave the Suns their pre first round priority pick…

AFL general counsel Andrew Dillon said the AFL believed the three-year assistance package was critical to providing a sustainable solution to the challenges the Suns were facing, meaning “challenges of the past are not repeated”.

“There is no doubt the Gold Coast Suns have had enormous challenges throughout their short history and it is to the benefit of the entire competition that the Suns are competitive,” Dillon said in a statement.

"The AFL and football fans want a strong and even competition, and while the endeavour and intent can’t be faulted by the Gold Coast Football Club, there have been executional challenges along the journey that have impacted the on-field competitiveness of the team.

“The club … will continue to build strength in the organisation and delivering on their football strategy is crucial to the club’s long-term success. The special assistance approved by the AFL Commission will contribute to this.”

We literally just replace the team names and the case is made.

Interesting that Twomey has an article on the AFL site encouraging Essendon to seek afl assistance at the end of the year. He is pretty well connected in the league, so while there are no guarantees we’d get anything (in fact I’m certain we wouldn’t) it starts the narrative around us having a crack.

Need Eddie to push the narrative

There is no doubt Essendon have had enormous challenges throughout their recent history and it is to the benefit of the entire competition that the Dons are competitive,” Dillon said in a statement.

Easy.

We ain’t going to be good over night. This is rock bottom.

Some sweet sweet draft picks would really help at least give us some talent to grow before Tassie takes it all

I’d be asking for a point bundle for 2027 (yes, never been done before) but it would work best for us.

Ask for say 1000 points. We can use to match for players and it doesnt affect the draft or other teams selections.

Should trade Merrett out, pay all of whatever he is still has left to make and hope a team gives us an early pick

I’m Pretty sure it’s the spongy floors. Remove them and replace with concrete. Also concrete the ovals. Our team needs to harden up a bit.

we should at least ask if the dismantling of the hanger due to curse reasons can be done outside the spending cap

Just ask to be able to pre-list academy and father-son players or have a bigger discount.

Just need to convince the AFL to put pressure on Tassie and GCS to make some favourable trades with us to gives us a leg up at the draft.

The only picks we will get will be in 2027, when we need them most.

Aside from that I’d request a larger list size (which would bolster the VFL team more than anything) and and increased soft cap to attract some decent development coaches to actually help develop our players.

I’d also get them to cover Brads Payout

The AFL cnuts destroyed us with their lust for blood over the saga…..people seriously expect them to help us now? If they do it will only be based on self interest because of falling crowd revenue and poor TV ratings.

I hope we ask and I hope the AFL says to hand over the keys first.
Any assistance via draft picks, cap space etc will do little whilst we have clowns like Welsh running the show

We’re not getting any AFL assistance or priority picks.
We just won’t .. the AFL optics will never be favourable even if there were enough supporters inside AFL House

Essendon FC are on their own .. and to the rest of the league and clubs, need to find their own way out. Board, coach, assistants and list .. the bloody lot we still need to get right. We’re a long way off sadly .. but appointing a good coach rather than a political admin guy would chivvy us along the right direction. It really would.
