Review Essendon's 12th win in a row over Norf - 2025 round 8

I simply said Sydney are playing ordinary and have a heap of injuries. There’s nothing remotely controversial or even untrue about that but yeah righteo.

I left something out of my notes.

I looked at our options when we had the ball on the back flank. We needed to send an extra to the contest down the line because Goldy v Xerri wouldn’t work in our favour. To counter what we did, they had to send an extra down the line because they couldn’t match up well on our forwards, so we’d at least halve any contest. So North would send an extra down the line. Sometimes two. They’d hand off opponents to try and get a favourable player.
The bugger is, we didn’t have any other leading targets short in the centre square. The leading patterns weren’t there. So the player with the ball either looks for a short leading option down the line, or tries to switch and move their players off that wing.

For memory, Duursma had the ball once on the back flank. Looked down the line and there were 2 extra North players at that contest. I couldn’t find where our two spare players were. I looked inside, and there was no definitive lead. By the time I look at Duursma, he’d played on and turned it over.

Our major problem with long down the line kicking is that we don’t do much repetitive leads across the middle of the ground. And when the lead isn’t honoured, the second time that situation comes about, the lead isn;t as strong and the kick is made.

Players have no confidence to make mistakes. And in all honesty, I think most of the confidence comes from fans at the game. The groans after a turnover are evident. Regardless of what the risk reward is. And we also aren’t set up well so when a mistake occurs, we can’t minimise the cost (it’ll go the other way for a score more often than other teams).

I’m fine with the groans after a Redman panic kick out on the full. Or the Tsatas handball to a stationary defender. They were both silly turnovers. But when they are trying to make a positive play, we should expect errors. Especially if they try and move it on quickly.

I’m not sure how to fix our our movement of ball issues. We do not have great depth in the medium / small defenders. We’re playing the only defensive first players defenders on our list (Nguyen, Luol and Clark need VFL development time) and do not have the luxury of playing someone who is more of an offensive creator because we cannot trust our midfield to pressure the kicker into our forward line to be more attacking.

We truly have 1 good two way running wing at the moment and that’s Duursma. Roberts is developing in the seniors, Martin and SEH is more attacking than defensive and Cox and Jones are more positional / zone based players than help with ball movement. We desperately need a very good two way running wing to help us both defensive and offensively.

And that’s before you get to how we deliver into the forward line.

We just don’t have a good list. Last year’s game style is best suited to our list, but there seems to be a hesitance to go that heavy with that style so we have whatever we are doing now. Which I still cannot put a description to.

he’s correct. they’re 14th and playing ordinary so if/when we win, we can’t enjoy it.

Ball-up to match their cøck-up.

AFL admitted the ball-up shouldn’t have applied as it was clear what happened - it should have been an Essendon free kick.

Agree, because it was clear which way the decision should have gone. But my understanding is that a correction in those circumstances is a ball up. No idea why - if an out of zone ump comes in on the field and overrules, they just flip it the other way.

Off the top of my head, probably missed some

Funny how many things that should have been applied in our favour but aren’t (eg Rampe goal post climb), while our opponents often get things that shouldn’t be applied in their favour but are (eg the Anzac Day fiasco a few years ago)

Nothing from the AwFuL about the absolutely bullshit Deliberate call on the coaches box wing?

Nope, as if!

We had a great run with the umps (again) and are in here complaining about a call that had no impact on the game.

This place.

Honestly though, with the ground congestion last night there is little alternative.

When we tried to play on and get run from the back half the option up the ground was always covered and resulted in a series of ever more pressured handballs until the got the tackle right. Better off kick to stoppage down the ground

He lay at least one crunching tackle, didn’t he?

Every time north fans give us crap about final drought just show them this ahah
