Review - Heaved hoed. 2023

See there’s another pattern when people on your position are proven wrong on your assertions and I point it out, it’s always oh you seem happy we lost.

Nope just pointing out
A you were wrong
B learn to read patterns better

Then maybe next time you won’t look like a fool when crapping on about how much things have changed and that other just can’t see it

I keep coming here … So I will never learn either …

One day I live in hope essendon supporters will learn to shut their mouths about how we are so awesome and will smash the opposition because yada yada yada…

That’s when I know things will have actually changed.

Until then the people who do it look like more than Carlton tools who do it.

Rather than spend time and money looking at issues like the logo, the club should devote its resources into the question as to why we rarely win interstate games. I have not had the time to look at all the stats so this is based on memory.
We have not won a game at the SCG for years. We have only won one game against Adelaide in Adelaide in recent years. We have rarely beaten Port there.
In 2013 I was at the Eagles game in Perth. We won both games at Subiaco that year, but we rarely win in Perth. We rarely win at the Gabba and even struggle at Metricon. The question is why? It is time the club addressed the issue. Why do clubs like Collingwood, Richmond and in their day Hawthorn and Bulldogs travel so much better than us.

Because we haven’t been a very good team for a while.

That will be $100k, thanks.

We beat Sydney at the SCG in 2020.

We’ve won the last two times we’ve played Adelaide in Adelaide (2019 and 2020).

These are outliers. The interstate record is abysmal and it has been for a long time. We do not travel well.

You brought them up as examples!

Parish should never play as the sweeper at centre bounces but did so a lot last night. And when he went trying to sniff out the pill he left the front door open and Freo scored against us, a lot

Early in the year setterfield was very important to providing some balance in the middle by covering exists or tying up to their best stoppage player which made room for parish.

His absence is being underestimated imo.

Nevertheless, the coaches need to go to work on what our stoppage set ups with parish look like because although the number of clearances was quite close the score board impact was basically the final margin.

We came out sideways or wide most of the time. They came right out the front. They also got lucky a few times with hacked kicks under pressure falling perfectly to the advantage of teammates (Fredrick got two of these and converted really nicely).

Indeed it should be noted that Freo converted from distance a lot better than our other opponents recently and got a lot more shots from inside 30 m too, with a few of those goals coming up from sloppy loose play at the drop off the ball close to goals.

We also let the ball out the back of marking contests more than any other game this year I reckon which put us under a lot of pressure.

It was a disappointing performance and probably the game we were able to exert the least influence on for the year. We didn’t move the ball forward well, lacked run from behind, didn’t get good deep entries, could not create space in our forward line, our pressure and tackling numbers were down and yet we didn’t get blown away and the loss can be directly attributed to their scoring from stoppages.

On the bright side we gave up fewer inside 50 and to my eye fewer repeat entries on long slow exists which is an area we needed to improve(their good conversation probably helped though). The two turnovers we did commit at half back from short passes were probably the worst for the year and in Martin’s case very uncharacteristic.

In some respects I think this was a good result for us. We can walk away from that game with a very clear area to focus on (stoppage balance) and a reminder ‘that you get what you deserve’. Our response next week will be very telling.

That’s a new one

I also thought we were back in the game and once again giving ourselves a chance right until the unpaid mark to Stringer (which was a mark) in the goal square that would have put us back within 20 points with 40 mins to play.

All supporters do that, because you know its called support?

Freo were very good and Port are going to be even better.

If you thought Brayshaw and Serong cause headaches.

Wait til (in their current form) Ports mids get a hold of us.

There were definitely a few home town decisions that didn’t go out way. They were not as such to post holding the ball to us last night and U think it cost goals against, at least once anyway

For sure. We need to structure up the centre better and not have our defensive sweeper chasing after balls his never going to reach

Menzies not starting was a big mistake. Has played with so much intent and pressure in our forward 50, I could quite not understand why he was made sub.

Also really keen to see our CBA breakdown between mids. Who gave up their rotations for Darce, and did we miss their impact?

I thought we missed outside run from the stoppage. Shiel would have been great to add to the mix and I think Setterfield would have added that defensive and contested pressure around the footy - rather than just hunting the ball when in dispute. Parish and Merrett are already very good at that

Yes, it was a poor showing last night, but we’re a mid-ladder team currently very capable of poor showings at this stage of the journey under a new coach and playing style. Just get up and go again, the season is going better than expected.

More than anything I think they got their starting positions wrong. Don’t start Darcey as the sweeper unless your ruck men are trying to hit it behind them (Ryder to Jobe). Our trucks usually want to tap forward or to the side

Last night was a shocker… it happens!
However, Scott was a major contributor in much of the chaos.
Why was Menzie benched? I get wanting to play Bryan; but, Weid ahead of Menzie, Really!
When the game was gone half way through the 3rd quarter, why sub Bryan and retain Weid?
I have been a supporter in the give Weid time and games club… but, that’s over!
He is as soft as butter, can’t hold a mark, doesn’t position well for a forward and brings nothing defensively.
The Kelly selection was strange in itself, as it weakened one of our strengths, run out of defence.
We are developing a real (good) problem in the midfield, by having too may players that are good in the middle. However, last night Scott, did not capitalise on this at all. Perkins was off early and could have been thrown in the middle, Hobbs and Caldwell should have spent more time there. Merrett is growing by being more than capable up forward.
If Parish can’t grow, like Merrett, and find a “back up” role, he will become a massive issue.
Stating the obvious… we need a big strong key back!
I’m looking forward to next week as I don’t think any of these things are catastrophic.
Weid & Kelly need to be out. Redman couldn’t play that bad again, Wright had a 2nd up shocker; and we will have a much better balanced team, as Scott will have learnt a lot last night.

Supporting the team is one thing…

The in earnt cocky arrogant " we will destroy this club cos we are awesome crap" it’s like a red flag to a bull for the footy gods to put you in your place …

I did warn the poster about tempting fate prior to the game.
They doubled down and made out like I just could see all the stuff they could and that BDB has changed so much …

Essington doesn’t care about your ego and will level it the second you fall into the tr…ap… Which essendon people love to do

Just finished watching the replay and I can say:
Ballet second half >>> Essendon second half
