There’s probably something to be said about a lack of chemistry in the midfield. Parish hasn’t played much with Caldwell, Perkins or Hobbs, in the midfield. And same goes with Bryan. In terms of ruck, we looked better with Phillips, because he’s already built a better connection with all the other mids.
Anyway, i hope that’s the issue, because it’s solved by just playing more games together.
This was a completely mild loss, flat performance coming off the bye (like the other 7 teams that lost off the bye), let’s just have some perspective I reckon, not the end of the season or the world lmao
Not picking Hind. Our backs were slow. Also Freo play a high press and went man to man shutting down our short kicking/possession game. We needed to start running it out, but didn’t have the run off half back to do so. McGrath started doing it in second half and we immediately looked better. It was too little too late. I’m no Hind fan but we missed him last night.
We kept going sideaways/switching off half back, but more often than not it just invited pressure and helped Freo get momentum. As above Freo play a high press with fast players that close space quickly. If the switch is on, great, use it, but we kept doing it rgardless. At times it was too dumb to be anything but a coaching directive. Cost us multiple scoring shots against, reulting in goals or incresed pressure.
I don’t think we travel especially poorly, we just haven’t been a very good team for a long time so overcoming interstate travels is often enough to sway a match our opponent’s way. Honestly, our very worst football tends to happen just as much at Marvel than anywhere else (Bulldogs 21 goals in a row in 2019, several 80-100 point losses in 2015, Port last year).
Feeling more philosophical about it today, now that I have slept on it.
Yeah, it sucked, and we all should probably temper our expectations a little bit. Whilst being 5th on the ladder would have been awesome, somehow I’m just not quite convinced they belong that high just yet.
But I don’t think they are that bad, and I don’t think Freo is that good. I’m not sure Essendon has played worse all year. I’m trying to look at every game in a vacuum.
Perhaps the bye can sap Port’s momentum. Maybe playing them at the G is in our favour. God knows I’ve seen them ■■■■■-slap us at Marvel enough times. Maybe they’re simply due to lose a game after winning 11-12 on the trot. Things have a way of tempering themselves over time.
All that being said, we should expect much better than what we saw last night. That won’t cut it.
Looking at it this way it’s an improvment in that it’s taken 16 rounds to dish up the sort of ■■■■ we’d show up with in previous seasons by round 3 or earlier.
I am pretty remote atm, so didn’t watch the game and won’t be able to see the replay.
I am reading lots of finger pointing and name calling in this thread so far.
OK, but which players did play well?
