Review thread 2023 round 5 - Ess def Melb 104-77

I think this is the most concerning sign. He looks low on confidence and not fully engaged. Needs to remember he can do it and get some enthusiasm.

After getting home and polishing off half a bottle of gin I can’t believe we made Melbourne look second rate tonight. It’s just good to have belief. I’m not watching the replay tonight but will watch it tomorrow when I can concentrate a bit more. Bring on the pies.

What really hits you is that it’s structure that’s doing it.
Sure, we’re using the…tools we have well, but…

Stringer can be better.
Draper…well, who knows what he can be.
Setterfield can be better.
Jones can obviously be a lot better.

And we’re playing tough, which we all wanted to see.
But what happens when…if…we play tough and play with confidence?
Because I don’t think we’re really doing that, yet.
Really good teams, and you can pick your own, play with a trust in themselves and their teammates that they’ll get it done.
They trust their judgement, and their disposal, and their choices, and that’s when you really start to see flair…as well as toughness.

I don’t mind the over the shoulder handballs.
Used to use them myself, was a big fan, if you know where your guy will be.
Anyway, pardon my nostalgia, but…we’re not quite there yet, but you can kind of see it emerging.

Of course we’ve seen what sheer belief in attack looks like.
That first quarter against Port was fun, back in the day.
But to combine that with a solid defence…

It just might be a very interesting year.

Can someone can tell me how I can download/watch the replay from overseas?

Kaya doesn’t work overseas.

I assume foxtel won’t either?

Loved how much it meant to the team. Seeing the different groups get around each other on the ground. Especially Draper and Phillips.

Should be available on the AFL website later today.

Wait until 2MP is back…

Big test is versing Collingwood off a 9 day break.

With a start like this the idea of a season used to audit the list and bring on young players will be going on the backburner.

When you are hot like this who is going to mess with the team except to match up with specific teams and Scott is smart around selection and game day coaching.

No wonder brother Chris did not want Brad to get back into coaching.

Download EpressVPN to your phone, laptop etc. It is $8 a month and works with Kayo. A lot of the other VPNs do not work.

I love how when shepherding the ball through on the goal line the attacker can do anything to the defender.

E.g. the redman touch on the line (clearly front on contact free) and the McGrath attempt to touch on the line but it clipped the goal post (petty pushed him in the back).

If both these incidents happened anywhere else on the group the umps wouldn’t have been able to get their whistles out quick enough

Bout to sit down and watch the replay.

Most pleasing thing for me is that many times in recent seasons when Melbourne get that 4 goal run on late 1st/early 2nd we completely ā– ā– ā– ā–  the bed, concede 8 or 9 goals in a row and the game is done.

To not only steady up but to slam on 7 straight ourselves. That shows just how much this group has grown and matured under Brad.
