Go easy on Joe fellas, it's been a very tough year for a kid his age, and he has battled manfully this year. The fact is if he gets a goal next week he will have kicked more goals in a year than any other Essendon forward since 2008. He is 21
Puts into perspective John Coleman's 100 goals in his first season, doesn't it? He was 20.
Matthew Lloyd was 22 in 2000.
Joe has been around long enough now to not have the “he’s only a kid” excuse.
He needs to work on his weaknesses now, if he is to fulfil his potential.
Yeah.. and Lloyd was playing in potentially a 'team of the decade' type level. With guys like Hird, JJ and Mercuri feeding him.. Lucas taking a huge defender and no swarming defensive structures..
I mean seriously… you can’t be actually comparing the two right now?
I don’t know if Daniher will be as good as Lloyd (here’s hoping!!!) but ffs… You compared one of the greatest full forwards of ALL time, in a PREMIERSHIP winning team AND two years older!!!
If JD is at a better club right now… he would still have kicked his 35 goals but he would be a 3rd tall and considered a jet. Pretty hard to shine as a forward when the team scores sub 50 every week…

Yes a lot of that is relevant.
But the point I make is that age and inexperience is not what is holding Joe back. The very good key position forwards (not necessarily all time champions) have done a good deal of their learning and developing by the time they have played 3 seasons on 40 odd games. Joe has a number of things he needs to improve on, most notably holding his ground in a marking contest, and not going to ground all the time.
Whether a better team around him would assist him to kick more goals, or the modern game is harder for a marking forward (both true), Joe needs to get better if he is to be a good player in the modern game. The modern game of keepings off and zone defences, with an extra floater back a lot of the time, and attacks via fast breaks through the middle, is not suited to a player of Joe’s body type. If he is to succeed he needs to be able to run and present better, compete better on the ground (eg hold his feet), and be able to compete more like Hooker does when the extra defender is back and his man just bodies him away from the contest.

if you want him to compete like hooker youll have to wait a fer years to get the body and confidence like hooker
still a little bit of a runt
there have been glimpses of what he can do with his arms and his athleticism… only a matter of time until he gets the confidence and fitness to do it consistently
I can’t believe they subbed McKenna off. What a pointless exercise.
This is half the problem at Essendon. They don’t persist with players and yet they give the same senior players guaranteed games even if they don’t perform…
This is why you need a coach and a culture that is harder on players.
Was it Chapman that said in his fairwell video that players need to be harder on each other.

... and clocked up his 100th game. 2000 was his 6th season, after debuting in '95.
Joe is in his 3rd year, and has played 40 odd.
Settle down.

And Lloydy was a champ, but he had some very handy guys hitting him on the chest with the pill consistently. Some of our blokes think that Joe is 3 metres tall as they kick it so high, and Matty Lloyd never had two or three forward son him, We actually had a forward line that took pressure off him.

Although there are definitely parts of his game that he could improve,
I don’t think the comparison to Lloyd is fair.
Lloyd never(?) got asked to ruck like Joe has.
He spends a lot of his time around the ground, similar to Salmon.
Our midfield has been very poor - Kennedy would’ve struggled to kick 50 at our club this year. Joe has had a good season all things considered and continues to develop nicely.
With the midfield and quality f50 entries we had in 2000 even I could have kicked more than Joe has this year (though admittedly, I was probably in my peak in 2000. Joe would have kicked 50 himself and he would only have been about 7 years old). Very unfair comparison to Lloyd (or 84 Salmon for that matter, for similar reasons).
