Didn't get to see the game but seemed a repeat somewhat of last time based on comments, highlights & stats:
1. Poor start
2. Disgraceful umpiring thereafter that meant we were prevented from ever really getting back in the game. For Sydney to win the inside 50m arc free kick count about 10-1 is staggeringly one-sided....something similar happened last time. There seems to be a very low threshold when it comes to Sydney a free kick but a very high one when it's the other way.
Best thing overall? We kept Sydney to only 79 points which is so far the lowest winning score of the round and may still be that at the end of the day. Until the Goodes' free kick we were still in the game well into Q4.
And we outscored them after quarter time.
We are not far off being a Top 4 team.....must come to play in Q1 against the top teams as that has been a common theme this year: Sydney (twice), Hawthorn, Geelong.
Absolute farken disgraceful umpiring, there is enough evidence there to commence another investigation and legal suit against the AFL. The most woeful part was the umpires congratulating themselves at the end of the game for stitching us up, what further can I say but utterly deplorable !
Stop having a fkg whinge. Legal suit? Turn it up, thats just ridiculous. We are not the only club copping a raw deal. I have watched a few games this round and its been just as bad. But for some reason people on here act like we are the only team ever to be harshly done by. Give it up, ya sound like petulant children when you bang on about how it must be some sort of conspiracy against us. Its pathetic
And by the way, most (not all) of them free kicks in that video were there
get the fark over it. Bad decisions get paid against every side all the time
Like bomba said it’s no disgrace losing to Swans. We did give it a crack and it was more like We Are Essendon than Essington on the night. If we play in that form and the past 5 weeks, we are doing good and I feel confident we will be around past week 1 in finals.
It’s not that some of those frees were not there, it’s the lack of consistency in the decisions. Very frustrating to see a free paid to the Ducks, and a minute later the same thing happen to a Bomber player, with no free paid…players and fans get frustrated by this.
I reckon there would be some good footage of Jake C getting mauled too… Yet down the other end it’s “hands off”. Reduces the quality of the spectacle.

Thank you. And there were plenty more instances during the game where I thought, oh crap he's got the Swans guy high, only for play to go on. Jack and that play very well for frees and make themselves difficult to tackle. We got sucked in plenty of times. It was ugly and seemingly unfair, but a lot of the frees were there.

I hate it when people say that.
The players are not fools for tackling the opposition in a manner that would otherwise be correct had the opposition not decided to lower their head at the last minute to try and draw a free kick. Nothing about getting sucked in. That's the nature of Australian Rules, if someone has the ball you tackle them.
You shouldnt be wary about tackling someone because there's the possibility of the opposition trying to immorally get a free kick by putting themselves in a position where they could be completely unnecessarily seriously injured.

And then you get this. The tackle by the Richmond player in 41 on the GWS player is certainly textbook in the back, day in day out. Lands right on his back with his full body weight and force.
Compare that with Winder's free against where there was minimal force in the back but was outrageously penalised because he didnt 'roll the man'.
Fk off anyone saying 'oh who cares theres always bad decisions'. Theres bad decisions, such as simply not seeing a free, then there are decisions made and judged by rules that dont even exist.
You know, and even if there are always bad decisions, it shouldnt be an excuse for the umps. Essendon has been **** for many years now and people on this forum harp on to astronomical heights about how things need to change for us to be successful again. And thats absolutely fine, we shouldnt for a second accept mediocrity.
Why not apply that same standard to the umpires, the people who make and enforce the rules of the game? They're single handedly making this game a pain in the balls to watch. Why should they be excused because they are consistently ****? It seems theres the written rule book out there somewhere, but somewhere along the lines the umpires saw it fit to interpret the rules in order suit the needs of the match at hand.
It's the other way around. The rules dictate the game, the games dont dictate the rules.
By umps I mean the rulemakers, the senile flogs that change the rules, the people who enforce them, the people who subsequently defend the people who enforce the rules, all of it.
There are matches when you sit back and say 'oh yeah the umps were really neutral, they missed a couple but on the whole it was pretty fairly judged', so there clearly is a better standard of umpiring than that shown in the close to majority of the matches played. That is what they should be aiming for.
But yeah Essendon were great. Hurley gun. Jerrett shitehouse. Thats my review to keep it relevant.
Having said that, it‘s pretty clear why we have a persecution complex against the Swans. Since 1999, 15 of our 24 games have been away (note that includes a home final, so it was scheduled as 15 of 23). That includes a stretch of 6 away games in a row.
In those away games since 1999, we've got 42% of frees. In those few home games, we've got 59%.
In that time Sydney have missed out on a home game once (2012, when we were assigned to prop up both GC and GWS instead) and we have missed out 8 times. It‘s hard not to think they‘re taking the ■■■■ a bit with the “drawâ€, which directly affects scores and frees.

Nice one. So since 1999 what is the total frees for and against?
Numbers aren‘t the full story, of course: we “won†the frees in the game earlier this year, but were still the ones to come out of it with the sore head.

Good work.
Is it possible to look at the frees imbalance inside the 50m arcs?
I think you will find it is staggeringly one-sided as it was Friday night (10-1 Swans way i think).
