Review thread V Pies

It started out a small thing, but by the end of the game is blatantly obvious that the Pies look for each other when they spoil packs. So many loose balls fell straight into their hands that it was no coincidence, they must be coached on how to do it and where to position themselves to gain the most advantage.

“Lest we forget”

I’ll say one thing, in the preseason one of the things that really bothered me was that we still persisted with the default transference of the ball to the back pocket, and then unable to move the ball out.

We saw that a billion times today.

Mernda or Hurstbridge?

Yep, we never tried to change it up.

Then none of our players have the sufficient work rate to actually work around the ground to give the kicker in the pocket an option

It’s just
Kick to the pocket
Long kick down the line

Rinse and repeat all game

It’s simply numbers at the ball, and players on the alert.

How did we let a 38 year old pants us like that? Do we have no pride?

And the Sidebottom goal was just a kick in the nuts.

Maybe.. my point is we don’t need to solve it today. Richmond are apparently gold star rebuild, destined for the next era. They are worse off than us in terms of ruck prospects / coverage. We might he’d to trade or get a FA.

Don’t need to solve it in short term.keep playing Bryan and developing him and Vigo and see what opportunities arise over next 2-3 years.

That is too convenient an explanation, it is more than that.

More like Luton Town!

Problem is they have won 3 flags since 2017. People Need to stop comparing our rebuild to Richmond, context is everything - we need to find our long term ruckman and do it soon…and it ain’t Bryan…that was my point

Yea, don’t disagree. Think he can go to another level. Thought he was ok today, also I was having a bit of fun as you listed him twice.

I don’t think so. We have a generation of promising youth now at the club.

We just have to hold onto them. It would be a gut punch to lose more to expansion clubs or in trade to the top 4.

Im not really phased at losing any of our senior players. If that happens because they want to chase success somewhere else - don’t think it’s a big setback it’s probably a win.

But I’m talking about building a successful list. They don’t have ruck sorted. No more sorted than us but they too have time to solve it.

Blow it up

The lack of aggression and hunting the players with the ball was absolutely pathetic

We would constantly stand off a metre and try and corral them, previous weeks we have been going at them and either tackling or putting body pressure on them

Today, it was like the majority of the players were scared of contact.

The too is what I am saying I have a problem with. They have time but why do we have time to solve anything given we have been a rabble for 20 years?

I want to touch on the few positives for the day.

This is only based on the first 3 qtrs as I caught an early train home (a good decision based on the last Qtr).

SEH looked good on Elliot.

He mis kicked a few though I do like his creativity by foot, and he moves well.

I think there is a player there.

I need to see more though.Just play him and find out.

I expect this might have some pushback…I thought Reid began to turn it around.

His marking is still down, yes.

He will likely never be the competitive animal that we crave.

There is enough there to make a good player.

Fingers crossed he can put 20 games together.

Roberts continues as a consistent week to week performer.

He makes errors but never stops competing.

Farrow will be a good player.

Can’t add much more.

ADW gave us a chance early to stay in the game.

Couple of great goals and a terrific mark.

That’s all I’ve got…

1 McGrath…not the worst and at least kept trying to the end
2 Farrow…a bit overawed by the occasion but will continue to improve
3 Parish…after repeated cases of short stepping, should never play for the club again (at any level)
4 Langford…one of few senior players who kept trying
5 Tsatas…poor, but persist with
6 Caldwell…wtf has happened to this guy…going backwards at a rapid rate of knots
7 Merrett…did some good things but well below his best
9 Robey…I’m still wondering if he actually got on the ground…but another to persist with
10 Kako…one of the few who gave a genuine effort all game
15 Sharp…looked slow, made basic mistakes…but definitely worth persisting with
20 Wright…was always going to struggle against their rucks…and did so
21 Roberts…great first quarter…but just a pile of meaningless stats after that
22 Durham…gave some good efforts…but nowhere near enough
25 Prior…the cheapest of cheap stats…almost zero impact on the game
26 May…who would want to be a key forward for this team
28 Duursma…tried but too many fumbles and poor decision making under pressure
30 Caddy…22 more like him please…never drops his head…just keeps working and putting his body on the line
31 Reid…soft as both physically and mentally
32 McKay…see above line
41 El-Hawli…another one of the few who gave genuine effort all day
44 Day-Wicks…awesome first quarter and then just disappeared completely
45 Edwards…is not, and will never be, a backman…wtf was the thinking about playing him back???
46 Blakiston…challenged skills wise but just keeps trying…gave a better effort than probably two thirds of his team mates.
