According to the Age article, McGrath said could not match their skills level; whatever the reason, Worsfold said it could not be fixed during the game.
So, it’s got nothing to do with the game day coaches?
Who is going to take responsibility?
Which could just indicate that it was not true. No consequences for posting factual information.
Disagree. If it’s highly personal in nature, a club would likely intervene.
Why? News always gets broken of players doing drugs, cheating on partners, gambling, fighting bouncers, mental health problems. How much more personal can you get? Why would it be any different?
Yes, we can look forward to the next train wreck this weekend.
It’s a bit hard to run around with big head and figjam syndrome
Just delete it and you won’t feel like spewing, watch it and you may .
I can’t belive I did it, but I just finished watching the game for the second time. Here is the thing, for the first 15 minutes of the game, we chased, we set up our defence. GWS got no easy ball. We stuffed up going inside 50 a few times but we went in more than they did.
The they got a few easy goals from some genuinely bad one on one contests, and the whole team just lost it, hands on hips, heads down, no desire to fight to minimise the damage much less get it back in our control. We were not just second to the ball all over the ground, we where a good 2-3 meters behind our opponents from then on, no one looked to be running flat stick except Saad and Walla.
We have a lot of guys in our team who look to be really found wanting when things where not going our way.
It really was pathetic.
Usually those reports generate from things being posted on social media by ex partners, dodgy mates etc
Very rarely do you hear of anything that personal - apart from rumours (not generally posted by anyone connected to footy)
Buddy Franklin for example. Gary Ablett as well. No one spoke publically about his personal issues until well after his sister passed away.
Heppell opens up on round one lossDyson Heppell says it has taken time to digest the Bombers’ disappointing loss to Greater Western Sydney.
Essendon captain Dyson Heppell says the club can’t hide away from its loss to Greater Western Sydney.
The Bombers’ 2019 campaign begun in disappointing fashion on Sunday, losing to the Giants by 72 points, which leaves them on the bottom of the ladder ahead of round two.
Essendon was outplayed from the beginning of the contest and kicked just three goals to three-quarter time and managed only five majors for the game.
Heppell said he was “extremely disappointed” with the showing as the Bombers look to return to the finals this year.
“We certainly came into that game feeling we were prepared and ready. That’s far from what we’re all about. It didn’t show up the way we would’ve liked and we’ve got to look at that closely,” the captain said on Monday.
"We can’t just sweep that under the rug. It’s going to take a little bit to move on from that. You’ve got to have a close look at where we did fall apart.
“But you don’t learn unless you go through adversity and we’ve copped that round one early in the season, and we’ve really got to learn from this. I know we’ll bounce back.”
Essendon was without key posts Cale Hooker and Joe Daniher, but faced a Giants line-up that was missing midfield cogs Josh Kelly and Callan Ward, plus defender Nick Haynes.
The Bombers, with new recruit Dylan Shiel facing his former side, were tipped to be a rising side this season and Heppell said Sunday’s performance didn’t reflect the playing group.
“It takes a bit to digest what’s just happened,” Heppell said.
"Having a bit of a look at the game on the plane on the way home and there’s a few efforts there that you think that’s just not us. It’s not the way we want to play our footy and we don’t stand for that.
“We’ll have a look at that, address it, and be really clear, open and honest about the way we performed and I think that’ll allow us to address it and then shift onto next week.”
Forward Jake Stringer arrived at the Bombers’ Tullamarine base having had scans on his foot following Sunday’s game, but said he had been given the all clear despite some bone bruising.
The Bombers have made alterations to their gameplan to beef up their defensive structures this season, and Heppell said he was optimistic they will find much-needed cohesion in coming weeks.
“It’s not a massive shift from the way we played last year. I’m certainly surprised we haven’t clicked how we would’ve liked. Eventually it’s going to click for us, and it will, and I know we’re not going to perform like that again. I’m confident in the group to really bounce back,” he said.
Essendon faces St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.
Does connors represent daniher?
Hep better be careful about this comment
We don’t want to upset the players with criticism, remeber what happened last time someone said something like this.
“Heppell opens up on round one loss”. He opened up during the loss too - and let GWS fist us elbow deep.
Yep, I don’t know how the coaches can be held responsible for that.
Gutless effort from the players.
Do you think it was partially fitness?
I felt like it was both.
Some guys definitely looked under-done, but there where plenty who had no excuse.
The stat about distance run is close to the most damning stat I’ve ever seen in footy. They ran as much in the first half as we did for three and a half quarters. They ran nearly 100km more than us in total for the game.
They did this while having more of the ball and winning the contested possessions too.
We could highlight 100 skill errors and fumbles but it all starts with work ethic. Instead of working that extra 50-100 metres to provide an option, we are forced to take more difficult kicks which we are more likely to turn over. This leads to more pressure, which leads to more fumbles, which leads to more pressure on the next possession. So many times we didn’t work to apply blocks for players with the ball or we didn’t work to provide options up the field.
We need to be running so much harder than what we do and I refuse to believe it’s a physical thing. Running is meant to hurt, it’s meant to be uncomfortable. We simply get to that point and… stop.
Courage in 2019 is more about running those extra 100km’s a game than it is about backing back into a pack.
We are the softest club in the competition and have been for a decade.
Apparently that gps data was munted. However, they had 91 more uncontested marks than us, and we lost the contested possession by 40 odd, that’s just as damning.
I think there was an error with the data. Apparently it didn’t log the 3rd QTR. Still wouldn’t have been great though.
