Review v WCE 2024

40k against lowly interstate opposition who hadnt drawn 40k to marvel since we rinsed them in 2012 is a decent turnout

This freo numpty is all upset that we only have one more interstate game and wants us to give Freo our home game. Get stuffed.

Maybe we should have received an extra home game in the first eight rounds.

Well I didn’t see the Bb comments but our defense looked brilliant at times, spoiling, intercepting, there were some real heroics and we saved a lot of goals.

But then WC got a few goals that just looked too easy, usually off turnovers, or sometimes a free kick and sometimes they just beat us in the middle for a quick goal… and of course every defense looks ordinary when the opposition take an easy mark and goal - WC would say their defense was worse but we’d put that down to our superior offensive play. Some of our kicks inside 50 to Wright/Langford/Stringer were absolutely pin point.

I must admit our defense looked pretty ordinary moving the ball out of defense. We took a lot of risks which didn’t always pay off, and there were a couple of dead set clangers straight to an unmarked opponent. On one occasion Laverde had the ball in the pocket, one of our players comes streaming towards him intending to bring his opponent with him and open up space behind him, but that didn’t happen so after missing the first option Laverde was left with no option but to kick long and it went straight down an opponents throat.

I must say I thought Laverde played extremely well. I know many have him outside our 22 but he was one of our best in defense yesterday

Heppel had some clangers too, but then redeemed himself.

Perhaps Martin wasn’t as involved as he usually is, we definitely preferred to kick to the pocket then go down the line, perhaps after a few risky handballs, rather than hit up Martin and try and go through the guts. Maybe because we had Harry on the wing? He certainly brought down a few good marks, as did Wright and Draper.

Good maths :+1:

Don’t they want all the practice at the G they can get?

The coaches. They know. DUZ.

Essendon v West Coast

10 Samuel Durham (ESS)
6 Jake Stringer (ESS)
4 Zach Merrett (ESS)
3 Jye Caldwell (ESS)
3 Tom Barrass (WCE)
2 Liam Ryan (WCE)
2 Jamie Cripps (WCE)

Edit: Interesting that Merrett got a 4 from one coach and no votes from the other.

Yeah, pick a team that literally stopped in the last quarter and won by less than a kick against a team that’s won 2 games in their last 30. LOL!

The same Dwayne Russell?

It’s not important at all but find it funny how little recognition Caldwell gets in the coaches votes.

Hawkins out is a good position to start from

Laverde deserves a couple of votes at least… lol

the same thing has been happening with Goldy, it’s the mids or setup, Perkins on Ryan was a constant killer as Archie drifted and Ryan hit at speed, but overall we let them get runs at it and they had skills to pick it up where we often do not

FKG LOL

Jones had a ok game but fainted the handball after every mark, give it or get on with it goes for a number of our team, Harry would often be the culprit of sending us farking backwards!

I’d suggest that taking an average stat and trying to apply it to an individual game has little meaning.

The teams Eagles have payed away are: Port, Dogs, Gold Coast in Canberra, Collingwood and Adelaide. Aside from Adelaide, who beat them by 99 points recently, and 67 points last year in Adelaide, I’d say results have been about what you’d expect given the injuries they had earlier in the year.

If they had played the team they fielded against us on Saturday all year, I daresay they would have averaged a lot more than 50 points away. Also, I think it’s probably the points differential/percentage that has more relevance, as some games are low scoring, highly defensive games, and some games are a shootout, depending on how both teams choose to play on the day.

Last time, we chose to play a slow moving, defensive grinding game, and won by a single goal at their home ground. This time, we chose to play a quicker, less contested brand, and won by 30 points, even with the umps creating 3-4 goals difference in their favour.

For me, we got the win, we changed a number of players back into the main team, and we got the usually flat first game back from the bye out of the way. Let’s see how we go next week with no excuses, and hopefully more even umpiring.

Our clearance work is still a real worry.

We are lucky WCE kicked 5.10 from clearances rather than 10.5 otherwise we could have lost that game.

Cool Freo, now take away 7 of your home games and pretend like you are playing 7 derbies instead.

Yeah, you wouldn’t like that would you.

Very strange votes. Obviously Durham got 5 from both coaches, but:

  • Stringer must’ve got 4 from one and 2 from the other.
  • Merrett got 4 from one coach and none from the other.
  • Caldwell got 3 from one coach and none from the other. Ditto Barrass.
  • Ryan or Cripps for one each from both coaches, the other getting 2 votes from one and no votes from the other.

This plays to my theory that Brad doesn’t give him votes. He has been undervoted all year.

Maybe he is not following instructions or something, maybe he is not living a Professional AFL Lifestyle™.
