Review v WCE 2024

I don’t think that would be a reasonable complaint at all. We lost the clearances yesterday 35-44 and kicked 61 points (10.1) from stoppages, compared to our average of 36 clearances and 34 points from stoppage. That’s our equal highest for the year, tied with round 1, and the second highest proportion of our score from stoppages behind round 1.

Great win by Melbourne!

I thought Brisbane had the most impressive win of the round.

They will make finals and go deep. Finally pulled their finger out.

Would be ironic the one year they may miss the top 4 they win the flag.

6 teams had byes: there were only 6 matches played. Not much difficulty in picking a top 5… and he still got it wrong.

Couldn’t make the game due to illness. I wonder how many people missed for the same reason - there’s a heap of cold/flu/Covid around which might be the reason “only” 40k turned up to a sellout. On that note, how awesome are our supporters? Phenomenal numbers no matter whether we’re top 4 or bottom 4.

My only comments on the match: big big love to Lav …. injury prone early in his career, now as hard as a cat’s head at halfback. Absolutely brilliant game from him, shaded only by the superb Duz. Hepp continues to shine too. Just as well Lav and Hepp performed well because our bigger defensive stars Ridley and McKay were a bit flat.

I’m not going to get ahead of myself. Each week we manage to stay in the top 4 is a happy one, especially given where we thought we’d be. I’d love to roll the Cats on Saturday, just to shut a few people up. I reckon Danger will win his appeal but still they’re quite gettable.

It’s a few weeks away but one game where I reckon we can cause a massive upset is the Swans at Marvel. I know they’re top for a reason but, I dunno, I’m feeling it in my waters.

It should be about winning a flag this year. Why not? If we can win a final or two, why not 3 or four?

True if we a final then anything can happen might drive us to go all the way

I think he should’ve kept it at 4.

Us and Melbourne do not deserve to be on that list.

It’s still sinking in that west coast average 50 points on the road this year and we conceded 13 goals 14 to them

It would be nice if we had a variety of structures to implement depending on the opposition, perhaps that was what we saw yesterday.

Coaches talk of “playing the game on our own terms” but maybe we should back ourselves to win a shootout against lesser teams and play our defensive “don’t get ahead of the ball” plan against better teams.

If we only play a certain way week in week out we become predictable.

Just watched the whole game as I didn’t manage to catch it all yesterday. That performance was the perfect one to stir up the naysayers on Blitz I reckon!! Some really poor defensive efforts and sketchy ball movement (largely uncontested kick marks across and back) which had me raging at the TV!!

Umpiring (we should be requesting that the bald umpire (whoever he is) should never umpire our games again) was really bad and directly cost us goals on a couple of occassions.

I think the coaches foxed a bit, evidence being Harry Jones on the wing and Goldy a late out. I think this plays into team psychology/structures a fair bit which might also account for the performance. Having said that I thought Caddy was really good.

Overall I never thought West Coast were going to win. We definitely coasted through some of that game but we never gave up the lead and anytime it felt like West Coast were building momentum we were able to snaffle it and kick a goal back. Not a game I’m hanging my hat on; our pressure around the ground was ■■■■; but we won by 5 goals at a canter. Bank the win and focus on Geelong.

You mean this jackhole…

Yeah that’s the one. Not the first game this year I’ve seen him not pay blatant freekicks for us. Enough is enough.

I wonder what his free kick numbers look like for our games ?
Or if those stats are available ?

Jamar booked for abuse in AFL (nine.com.au)

This wouldn’t have helped Nicholls love for the Bombers.
Plenty of other clubs not happy with him either, gave Freo that Goal earlier in the year for not throwing ball back etc.

oh no we only won by 5 goals instead of 8, what a catastrophe

The fact he spells his name as “Mathew” says all you need to know about him.

He’s a massive tool and a terrible umpire.

To a certain extent we were doing this early last year.
We had a defensive gameplan that was tweaked depending on the opposition. It started off relatively well. But as the year went on, more and more players within the group would drop off in form or intensity and we didn’t have much flexibility to change the way the game was played. We had the ‘chips in’ play but that was really circumstantial.

I do think we are doing something similar, but not to sure what the reasoning for it is. Could be that our defensive first game style is too taxing to do through the entire season and we need a refresher ‘bruise free’ game every here and there. Or maybe we’re trying to work on a gameplan that gives us more time and space to use some flair whilst trying to balance the defensive side. Or it could just be an alternative style that we allow the group to signal to each other during games as to when it can or can’t be used. Sort of like playing in certain gears through the game.

I’m really looking forward to the next month of footy. No blow outs along the way, snag a few wins and at worst case we’re better than last season. There’s a chance we snag a finals win. Best case we snag a premiership (as unlikely as it seems).

I’m very happy with a win, and our ladder position so far. The Eagles had a decent lineup - Allen, Ryan, Darling and Waterman are a good forward combo. I didn’t see the game but following it on BB commentary seemed our backline struggled a bit.

I’m enjoying the ride this year. I have the impression Scott coaches very much for the here and now, young blokes have to fight hard for a spot. In the event we make the finals with a healthy list we will be very competitive. If other supporters think we don’t deserve to be there it’ll just make it all the sweeter when we roll them come finals time.
