Review v WCE 2024

5 goal win.

Scott gambled, gave Draper the minutes he needed. Probably cost us as their mids read him easily. Despite dominating the hit outs.

Coasters played well we played better.

Our skills were rusty and intensity down.

Listening to the song it sounded like a sunday arvo win

Some one needed to smash liam ryan bloke killed us in the middle

That was quite possibly the least enthusiastic rendition of the club song I have ever heard. Players maybe a little annoyed that they let WC get so close for so long.

We just don’t do, comfortable, satisfying wins where as supporters we feel like we can relax.

It’s why I don’t get people pre game saying they expect us to win by 8 goals, 10 goals etc.

Stoked that we’re 3rd at round 15.

Would’ve bitten your hand off at the start of the year for that.

But it feels the same as last year. I don’t think much has changed.

I think there’s probably a bit of frustration at our actual disposal efficiency and ball movement.

Lack of run and movement through missing targets.

F##k Yeah. Solid win in the end.
Bring on Saturday night.

Draper should just stay solo from now on.

No more goldy unless injury.

Can I ask an open question - who here is happy with this season?

I can’t help but think we are wasting our time.

We are not that good and not spending enough time getting good. We’re going to barely make the 8 and lose our first final yet again, and then reflect on the year:

  • 20 odd games pumped into Kelly
  • 20 odd games pumped into Heppell
  • 20 odd games pumped into Laverde
  • Too many games pumped into Goldy.
  • Tsatas dicked around for a half a year rebuilding his kicking by playing him half games as sub, on a wing, or missing games held over as an emergency
  • Caddy played 2 senior games to the bye (not the end of the world)
  • Others like Roberts and even Hayes have played good footy but not looked near inclusion
  • Injuries aplenty - Baldwin and Reid another year wasted.
  • Martin has spun his wheels all year.
  • Wright gone backwards
  • Bryan no closer to ā€œarrivingā€, having not been given a go

We’ll know very little more about our side, all the while Merrett Parish Wright all get a year older.

On top of this, I see no reason to believe we have turned the corner mentally. We are such an unprofessional club. Today was EFC vs. EFC’s mistakes (and Barrass & Waterman). I never ā€œexpectā€ a 10 goal win but ā– ā– ā– ā–  me, playing these guys at home without Reid & Kelly… they could still have won it with 5 minutes to go!

I’m rarely accused of being an optimist with the footy, but other than Durham & Caldwell we’re half way through the year and I can’t think of much we’ve learnt.

west coast average 50 points outside of WA
they kicked 92 and 13 goals 14, if they kick straight oh boy, isn’t that how it goes, you know win stats on a stat sheet and you deserve the win  I mean i’m sure that was the vibe against carlton.

You have to back in the 90s or eallrly 2000s where all of dons, pies, blues sitting top 4

Perfect win for me. We get the 4 points and there is more than enough for me to be critical of and harp on about for the next week

Also, the umpiring is making the game almost unwatchable at this point

That was an okay win. We won by as much as much as I thought, but the way we won wasn’t too great.

Defensively we weren’t so great. The first and third quarter were poor. Second and last were better.
A non existent forward press style of footy is not modern footy. Maybe it’s just because Menzie was sub and Gresham was out.

Duursma is our most important player. The amount of running he does really makes up for any deficiencies in our game style.
I thought the entire back six deserves a bit of praise. McKay, Laverde, Ridley, Redman, McGrath and Kelly all did their job well and held their opponents as well as they could.
The centre bounce work needs some help. They left too much leak out the front of the contest and without Martin there, the damage should and could have been much worse. If we had that kind of result against Carlton, we would have been smashed in that game.

I’m glad we’ve come back from the bye relatively well. Last year we were flat against Freo and lost. This year, we’re patchy but won.
Will be interesting to see how we line up next week with Goldy and Gresham to come back in. Also will be interesting if Hobbs comes back in to help with our clearance issues.

heppell getting the last goal then a big hug from merrett proves there’s still some romanticism in this godforsaken gambling vehicle

You do realise we are third? Or is this a ā– ā– ā– ā–  take?

Yep.

These two just stat pad with cheap kicks sideways and go for the sideways pass so they get an effective kick so nuffies go into bat for them by pointing to the stat sheet.

We don’t yet. It is clear the focus is on building the foundation of a team that competes and plays for longer than 5 mins each 1/4. It is a gradual process and we are not near it yet. But we are building it. Once that foundation is laid things will change regarding scorelines.

Still the Pies have made an artform of not putting teams away but still winning. I would be happy with that if it got us a GF win.
