With a bottle of red in his bag
Never met him. Wished I did. Admired him from afar I guess. RIP Doc Reid.
You know I always took him for granted being there, he was always there, it’s one of those things where a person is more than a person but a big part of Essendon.
Not many people have had 38 years service at Essendon and I doubt any other have, won’t be the same without you, bless you, thank you, love you, miss you already.
A lot of feels in these photos.
Outside of Essendon and AFL, Doc was always helping grass root footballers he was especially the go to man for DVFL footballers. I just wanted to share one of the many tributes to him from the DVFL Legends Facebook Page.
VALE Bruce “doc” Reid
All time legend sports doctor, passed away on Tuesday, a true DVFL legend doc that helped so many of us on this site front up on a Saturday or make into the forth coming year.
Words cannot express what a sad loss to the sports world and to me, the man was amazing knowledgeable and absolutely brilliant in his field.
His legacy and impact on my generation, the previous generation and post generation in the DVFL are next to none. His expertise and knowledge of the human anatomy were unbelievable.
The man was truely a magician!!!
My doc for over 30 plus years, he was smart, clever, quick witted, a larrikin but overall a genuine gentleman and great bloke, which I call a “mate”.
He helped me through my many injuries with the finest surgeons within seconds. He made me and others feel so welcomed within his superstar sportsperson clinic.
Brucey Rest In Peace, the world, our world is a much worse place without you in it.
Please feel free to add any doc stories!
He even did the right thing and passed from this mortal coil in the Off season.
Looking after the Bombers until his very last.
We’ll miss you Doc.
I met him once on a tram from the Epworth Hospital to the MCG. I thought I recognised him and asked, “Are you Bruce Reid?” He said he was, and we chatted for the rest of the journey about the team and various players. A very, very nice man. I hope he rests peacefully.
And all it took was for him to die in order to get the respect. The Age can Fark off!
Spot on mate, lots of bomber faithful feeling this way me thinks.
He will be always remembered as a hero and a stalwart of Essendon, one of the best never forget.
RIP Doc Reid you will be missed greatly.
RIP Doc… we will miss u
Perhaps the AFL could come out and admit what a bunch of utter C#nts they were and that might rectify things by a few percent.
I’ve just got home from a 14 hour work day to receive this news.
I am so upset right now - and it puts into perspective why I am numb about the effort or our club since the saga and their gutless capitulation to the propaganda of the AFL.
This man took them on and this man won.
This man reflects what our club should have stood for.
RIP Bruce - the two times I chatted with you at the Crichton were the highlights of those nights.
Legend.
Most of us haven’t met him, but growing up Essendon fans we all felt like we knew him as he was there every season. Hundreds of players came and went, he even outlasted the great K.Sheedy, but every year Doc Reid was there, he was the one constant we would always rely on. RIP Great Man and thanks for everything you did for our club.
Have the AFL issued a condolence statement?
Not going to derail this threat, Bruce deserves better, but fark we need Solly back, he’s exactly what the club needs, one of my all time faves, gutted when he went to freo with Mark Johnson (what a catastrophe that period was and we’re still feeling it).
I wrote this Dec 2018:
I have never met you Doc Reid . But somehow i know who you are, what you stand for , and what a giant of a man you are. Always there for our boys and there families ,always with our boys best interest at heart. at this time our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. … We are with you Red & Black all the way.
Sad to say , now Oct. 2020 its time to Rest In Peace Fly High Mighty Bomber. Vale Doc Reid.
