Rising Star Nominees & Careers

I was having a discussion with a friend last night, about Rising Star nominees and how successfully or not, they predicted careers. We tossed a few years around, and then came to 1993. Possibly the best year ever, I reckon.

How’s this for a list?

Fark me there’s some good players on that list.

Yep.
Tough year to break into. A lot of excellent players who weren’t nominated, too.
I can only assume Adrian McAdam was ineligible because of his age.
You’d reckon 23 goals from three games would have almost got him a nod otherwise.

93 comfortably the best. And fancy a side having 5 nominations in a premiership year. I would be interested to see if that was matched by any other team.

Martin Pike
Matthew Clarke
Justin Leppitsch
Greg Stafford
Drew Banfield

All debuted in '93.

Really only 4 players who were pretty much spuds, and Kowal and Grgic you could argue about.

Didn’t mind D Kowal.

Imagine them lining up in a team.

Dustin laughs in their general direction.

Is 1993 still comfortably the best?

Didn’t fit in the pic are Sam Wright (NM), Antony Morabito (Fre).

Any other contenders?

2002 is very very good due to 2001 super draft.

Riewoldt, Judd, Bartel, Hodge, J Kelly, S Burgoyne, Didak, T Kennely

And Ty Zantuck.

Doesn’t quite have the depth of 1993, but the top 10 is as good as you’ll see.

Yeah, I was getting a little excited there.
2010 is a very good team, but 1993 just wipes the floor with it.

Edit: but I’d have 2010 over 2002.

Edit: edit: and I am looking at them as teams, rather than a collection of players, which is probably silly.

1993 still clearly the best, but you’d expect that from a season most would say was the best ever.

Is it relevant that there were 15 teams in ‘93, 16 in 2002 and 2010, and expanded to 18 teams in 2011?

93 has 4 Brownlow medallists (plus West and Mecuri) and 3 guys who kicked 600+ goals. At quick glance I see 7(?) Hall of famers too.

Not sure you could ever beat that.

Well 93 is comfortably better than that lot!

Even with the superstar Jordan Gysberts???

Again, in my head I see them playing against each other.
And I think…I mean I’m very confident that 1993 still wins. It wouldn’t be a smashing, though.

Ehhhh. Maybe it would be…

I still maintain that 2010 is a very good team.
Any others? Apart from 2002?

Seems a long time between superdrafts.

I don’t see a gun forward in that 2010 team.

Fair.
I’m putting a lot on Hurley’s shoulders there, even with Martin.
