I thought we were unlucky a few times on deliberte both for and against us too, we missed a few calls to us that were right on the line. And I reckon Mcgrath was very stiff to cop a deliberte on the rushed behind which was really ridiculous to be honest. No huge complaints on umpires but those things stood out
The Draper delibrate was bs too imo
Went to the game and hope to post a review a little later today.
Feels like we are always behind in the way the game is trending.

Small forwards are king and we play one, an 18 year old and to be frank, the rest on our list are average to sh”t.

Key position players are generally now more mobile, athletic and able to provide something on the rebound while we have lumbering tree trunks in defence who stop, prop, absorb 10 seconds then kick sideways.
Ill give them a pass or cut them a break based on first game of the year against a team that looks pretty good top 6 side in pretty good form. We might need a few weeks to try out new positional changes not to mention outright new players like kako , caddy , even though he played a couple lasty year and major structual players like Reid and so on. There was a bit going on as far as the compsotion of our team. Not playing last week was a huge disadvantage to us as well I think
Iām a Shiel fan, he did do some good things but he didnāt use the ball well when in space. He should be given at least another couple of weeks to settle into that role. However if he doesnāt tidy up his kicking or another young kid has great VFL form heāll only play a few more games and a younger player will be given a chance in that role.
Last night we smashed Hawthorn at the contest, we smashed them in clearances, we smashed them in tackles.
It all keeps coming back to the same thingā¦ā¦ ball use.
We are not going anywhere until we start recruiting quality ball users.
Yeah but credit to hawks where due. I reckon these days the first 5 to 10 minutes of the first quarter is super critical for the tone of the entire game , and we were ok in the first 5 mintues, it was very frustrating that the greasiness of the game conitions and handling didnt go our way, hawks also struggled a bit holding the ball early to but they did it that much better than we did where it really counted , and to me that was the game there and then in retospect. This is where pressure and first game excitment if you want to call it that, affected us more than them , where they had that game last week
I think the punishment might be in perpetuity
The kids we got are all great kicks so hopefully they start taking the spots of poorly skilled players. Johnson el Hawli day-wicks
Yeah the first 5 minutes and Kakos goal was the only time i was genuinely excited
After that it was the same ā ā ā ā differnt year crap we have been accustomed to.
Weak tackling
Players sliping over
Players panicking
ā ā ā ā house skills
Pace all over the ground and better ball use.
Entries inside 50 to leading forwards need to improve and then we could match with top sides
Tsatas full game
Canon next week. Prior
Edwards Hayes SEH in
On notice Shiel, Perkins, McKay?
Would like to see Sub rotate weekly between Johnson Nguyen Clarke Day-Wicks and Unwin to give them a taste and hopefully accelerate their development
Younger players will offer more pace and better precision than currently on offer butā¦are they ready? If not when?
Tackling solid but offen just ball chasing too late instead of pressure to opposition player receiving the hand pass . Elite sides pressure 1 2 3 handball acts and shut down overlap
Also do we assess ground conditions before game for boot stud selection. Didnāt notice Hawks slipping
Well, actually the scoreboard does care because funnily enough more of their shots were awarded 6 points than ours.
Helpful response. Thanks. My concern is that I saw nothing on display of the running/ attacking HB that he was endeavouring to display in pre season.

The most positive aspect about the game and result last night was that the delusions of grandeur when it comes to season 2025 from a section of our fan base (including some Blitzers) should come to a more realistic halt.
This is a 5-6 win season list. You need to grasp that.
Stop wanting to win 10-11 games and finish a game or two out of the finals. Again.
This is our reality. Prepare now.
Huh?
Everyone is saying that the Hawks will be top 4. Well, after a slow start (which Blitz predicted due to Hawks playing last week) and despite terrible umpiring and bad team selections we beat them for the next three quarters.
Iām really not sure what all the whining on Blitz is about. Did the idiots here not tip the hawks? That weād magically become over night?
I think we look solidly like being a mid-tier team. Which is what weāve mostly been for 10 years.

Thatās what playing the kids looks like, weāre not a basket case weāre going to be competitive but I expect a good twenty minutes from the opposition each week will be enough to put us away
We could have gone into this week with Stringer and 2MP forward, Draper and Sheil in the centre and not played Ried(because we were too tall down back).
Instead weāre playing Caddy, Jones and retooled Draper forward. Bryan gets first Ruck with Tsatas and Hobbs finally getting on ball time. Reid plays at the expense of balance. Kako played and Sheil shunted to a flank.
So weāre finally playing our kids, but not as token sub role but in the key roles they need to develop in. Of course they will make mistakes, get beaten and have lapses in concentration, but thatās part of it.
We need to pump 50 games into them in these roles so they can lead alongside Caldwell and Durham whatās hopefully the beginning of a good side. Weāre still a good 6 players short that we need to find over the next couple of years too.
Well said.
Iām disappointed I took so long to say this as itās probably going to get buried but my summation is pretty similar.
Since this match up Rd 1 last year, the Hawks had a great year and essentially made 2 years of progress in 1 year, and we turned around and went backwards 1 year to start the build properly. As such, we are now 2 years behind them.
Itās ā ā ā ā ā ā ā painful, I canāt believe itās Sam Mitchell, Iāve been banging on about it for 5 years, Scott has a lot to answer for us spinning wheels for 2 years and then turning the ship around, but hey, it is what it is. Itās about where we will be come Rd 1 next year.
Quite a few Hawks fans over at big footy are giving us credit and said we are ok Iām surprised tbh
One said we were much better then Sydney
Was at an event last night so have just watched the replay. Cruisy watch without the emotion.
Thought overall it wasnāt as bad as some may think. First quarter we obviously got steamrolled but after that we were okay, just got beaten by a better side.
Caldwell is a machine. Granted Iām biased, but I think heās bordering A grade status. Not quite that elite elite, fighting for Brownlow medal type, but still A grade nonetheless.
The back 6 was disappointing. Mcgrath and Shiel were horrific. Reid made some errors but you saw a few flashes of what he could be. Prior soft, which was a bit unexpected.
Tsatas a disappointing first half but went okay in H2, barring that scrubber kick at pace. If this is game 12 or whatever, Iām intrigued to see what heās like at game 25 when heās confident he belongs.
Perkins and Gresham really strong 2nd half which was pleasing. Just wish we saw 4 quarters from Perk.
Didnāt love Bryan. Might be a similar situation to Tsatas that heāll grow into his shell a bit with consistent games, but minimal impact last night for my eye.
Overall disappointed with the loss, but certainly some decent things to take from it.

I kind of feel like this is the post of someone who doesnāt want to have too high expectations for fear of being hurt again, so they have gone hard the other way to protect themselvesā¦.
