Round 1 -Dons v Hawks Friday 14th 7.40pm @ the G

I think you may be underplaying Worpel & Nash a little.
Newcombe is very good.

Let’s see how they go.

I reckon Sicily is far too mobile for McKay (or Reid). Day and Nash are full time midfielders. We can safely assume these six players will play forward: Chol, Sicily, Ginnivan, Watson, Moore and Macdonald. Maginess will too , and there will be times when Chol is relief rucking, and times when Chol or Sicily or resting on the bench, which will mean they’ll only have one key forward (if we are including Sicily) for significant portions of the game.

I reckon we will need another small like Roberts to match-up on their fowards. The idea of someone like Reid or McKay matching up on Sicily or an even more mobile player is concerning.

Spot on

McKenzie is the interesting one. If he comes on as expected he adds a bit more class by foot through there.

I tend to agree with Odoyle on Nash and Worpel.

Day is the one who is genuinely, genuinely good. To the point where if he gets a decent run with injury I can see him being in the best 10 players in the competition and possibly top 5.

The thing that’s extremely strong with Hawthorn is their backline (in every way) and small/medium fwd group. They also have some great flexibility with Sicily, Hardwick, Weddle, Battle and others able to play multiple roles.

If they can intercept and bounce out of the backline to link up with half forward then they will be good again (like most teams, really)

I’m thinking Merrett starts in the midfield, maybe Durham on that half forward. It looks like Scott likes him there. Otherwise I actually think you’ve picked the team as it will be selected. I believe Hobbs will get a go, and Prior had a good preseason. Jones will get picked.

Days good,
The others are no better than Durham, and he might start at HFF along with Martin.
We actually match up pretty well against hawks midfield IMO.

I really rate Cam McKenzie he will be talked about as being a key cog in their midfield soon.

Mitchell doing a sheedy with the team sheet.

Notable absentees: Jack Gunston, Mitch Lewis, Calsher Dear, Changkuoth Jiath, Luke Breust

Scott will post all 3.

Hawks will rotate Nash and day through as secondary marking/leading targets.

McKay - chol
Reid - Sicily
Rids - Nash/ day (conceding that he’ll end up with ginnevan and Morrison at times)

You’re not wrong but Scott will pick 3 kpd.

At least with our own smaller forward line our pressure on the ball should be better which will hopefully force some dump kicks to our talls

I haven’t seen Nash play that role.

I’m more concerned about McKay and Reid getting mismatches, which will be inevitable if we go in with both.

Saying that, Scott never picks for the conditions or the opposition, and will almost certainly go in with his preferred side. I think it will prove to be a mistake.

Nash is 198! I need he was tall didn’t realise he was that tall. Probably not a cafe of trying to get him to push forward from the midfield.

I think we will beat them we seem to match up well against them

This might come back to bite me, but I think this whole Hawthorn hype is absolute trash.

They rode momentum last year with zero expectations and now have about six Key Position defenders playing at the one time.

They’re also going into a season with Chol as their sole KPF. IMAGINE the amount of heat we would cop if that were the case.

Their midfield of Newcombe, Day and Worpel hardly strikes fear either.

They’ll miss the 8.

Strange game against them last year.
They worried us, but their midfield were soundly beaten by ours, and we scored multiple goals directly out of CB which often countered a goal of theirs, thus meaning they never had momentum.

We can’t expect a repeat next week.

Pretty sure Haw will be looking to exploit mismatches, not accommodate our tall back line. Nash is a bullocking mid, not a marking target despite his size.

If Chol rucks 15% of game time, and both Sicily and Chol rest 15%, that almost half a game when only one of Sicily and Chol are forward.

I have my ticket will be going next week with patrick bombers. Don’t think I been to a Hawks rnd 1 loss yet hope that trend continues

Frost, Gunston or Ramsden (whoever they go with) is likely to be up forward too when that happens.

Look you’re not wrong. But Scott will pick 3 so I’m scrambling to find a way to make it work. If we manage to pin them back a bit it will play into our hands. We should definitely pick a runner as the sun though.

Hope the Swans smoke them tonight too just quietly
