Round 18: Brisbane vs Essendon, Gabba, Sun 12/07/26, 4:40 PM

Is it really in the best interests of the club to push Robey (stress fractures in back / no preseason) and Sharp (dislocated shoulder a month ago) as full time mids at the coalface when the game is hot for the remainder of the season? Or do we just want something to feel good? I’d keep giving them a half and rotate them through. They can learn that way.

Why not just play them when the heat is on at the start of the quarters then when they tire then can interchange or rest froward.

I don’t really care too much about the changes anymore.

Ridley injured again not a surprise.

Setterfield pushed out so we get to see more of a hobbled caldwell and underwhelming Parish.

What even is Jones doing near the emergency list.

Good to see Clarke and Robey back in.

Essington is filmed infront of a (diminishingly small) live studio audience.

I do wonder if Dean could have his time again whether he would accept the caretaker position.

I reckon he would. I reckon he cares more about rolling his sleeves up and helping out than anything else.

I’m not too worried about Setterfield out. Last week there wasn’t a matchup for him against the Saints. They tried him on NAS and abandoned that in the first quarter and shifted him to the wing.
Against Brisbane, he’s not going to Neale or Ashcroft. Dunkley is the matchup, but Dunkley is their run with, so he won’t go to Setterfield, he’ll go to any one of the others.
McCluggage might be a good matchup, but he’s been pushed out to the wing more this year than previous years.

I’d expect Setterfield back against GWS to play on Oliver. Against Hawthorn, he can have the Newcombe matchup (Maybe Day, but I’m not sure). Against Adelaide, he could take Dawson, but I’m not sure about that matchup. Against Geelong and Sydney, there is no matchup. Heeney maybe, but I wouldn’t bother with it. Probably better to have Robey go head to head with him. Against Port, there’s no matchup. JHf is a maybe, but for memory, Setterfield hasn’t gone to him in the past. Probably because JHF is as good outside the contest as he is in it.

I’d say Clarke and Roberts stay in the team. Jones, Blakiston and MaxKon would be the emergencies. I’m not a Blakiston fan, but I’d prefer him in than McKay and go with a more mobile forward line but that would need small forwards in there (not mids like we’re playing).

He went from board, to line coach, to head coach in the space of a year didn’t he? I don’t think he cares for his own reputation as much as what the club needs

Should be put on ice for the remainder of the season in order to keep him fit for trade week. Let him become someone else’s problem in 2027

Yep, rest him and have him get whatever surgeries he needs now so he is healthy come trade time

McKay has been dropped from what I’ve heard. Not sure who comes in for him. If it’s Jones it really is a nil-all draw.

If they were dropping McKay I’d probably prefer McMahon given a go, but he’s paper’s are probably stamped

lol

Oh boy

Nik Cox to blame. Only Harry Jones can save us.

Jones is just so so baffling.

the obvious solution to our structural problems is to get taller……..

It’s baffling that someone that actually cares and plays a role and is actually very good in Setterfield gets moved out of position and then omitted. Yet we keep giving Parish opportunities when he doesnt care, doesnt block, doesn’t chase, doesn’t tackle.

Sharp and Robey could actually learn good habits from Setters… sigh

Cox plays forward in VFL. Looks great. Promoted and plays on a wing. Omitted.

Setters plays inside mid. Plays well in first two senior games…then plays everywhere but midfield. Gets omitted.

Jones olays one decent half n a game for months. Promoted again

Blakiston looks poor all year and again gave away poor free kicks in VFL so no progressing. Gets promoted.

Thats the state of our club

I was about to type “I cannot believe the changes”…but realised that nothing has changed! What criteria our coaches are using to base the team selection is totally beyond me!
