Round 2 - Hawthorn - Discussion, Changes

Gibson got off apparently.  A little surprised by that given the footage I saw of him clipping Close.

Even so, with some discipline in our forward structure so we don't let him run free as a third man spoiler, they'll struggle to cover all our marking options.

Winders is a must for this game if he's right. Adds a lot of much needed class and poise.

I just HOPE that whatever 22 is out there this week, that we stay on our man and man up!

I'm so sick of watching Hawthorn games, where they are constantly running free and into position without an opposition player anywhere near them!

I can't believe teams let them do this all the time.

Comes down to fitness and discipline. Also Hawthorn are better at blocking for their team mates than any other team in the comp. We'll need to be 'on' for every second of the game but I think just having another mature, experienced head in the team (Chappy) gives us more composure throughout the game. Unlike last year, we now have that in the back, centre and forward lines.

Hardy presented something up forward then shut down beautifully down back. Bomber seems to value guys that will have a genuine go and play a role over all else.

Agreed. I don't get the Hardingham bashing going on here atm. Is he the new Dyson? The guy kicks 2 goals from a brilliant mark and great crumbing and then goes back and blankets their most effective forward and you guys want him dropped? What farking drugs are you lot on?

People aren't bashing him. But he cost us, big, several times. The team looked like a well oiled machine of kicking - and kicking well - to the right places, and he fkd it up. He needs to work on it. And I'm a fan.

I think why people are saying for Hardingham to make way for another player this week is because it is a huge step up in competition.
Those turnovers that he had against North, will be shots on goal against Hawthorn, everyday of the week.
Turnovers cost you goals more often than not these days and Hawthorn are masters at it.
I would say he keeps his spot but if Winderlich is fit and ready to go... You would have to think about it.

This.

I also think he has a spot down back and it completely changes the discussion based on matchups. He almost gets a guernsey v Collingwood no matter what just to go 3rd man up on Cloke.

On Hardingham, he directly coughed up 3 goals. That is fact. As aforementioned this kept North in touch.  He is a super competitor and versatile. Could kill us in a final or big game though...

Love to see you point out where these happened. Let us know the time and what quarters so we can verify. I didn't see it that way.

is lake going to be available for them? seen a bit of talk of gibson being suspended in the press but i can't see it happening from that incident, free kick no more.

match-ups will be interesting.

hooker - hale (will let hooker drift of a bit and be 3rd man up)

hurley - roughey (time to throw hurls a test)

fletch - gunston (the kind of player fletch cleans his teeth with)

hibberd - breust (he plays higher up the ground than thomas and gets most of his goals working back, this allows hibberd to play goal side, zone off and then pick him back up on the way through)

bags - rioli/puopolo (don't really believe rioli will line up down back. think he might just work a bit higher up the park from a fwd flank)

Lake is still suspended for another week, though they get Rioli back. Gibson is free to play.

i recon there was one in the 2nd quarter where he chipped it inside from the fwd flank and it went back down the other end where black got out the back of hurls and he gave away the free to hanson when ambrose went back with the flight which ended up with thomas.

recon there were 2 other kicking errors but we recovered the ball both times.

no stratton and no shoenmakers still leaves them light on down back. maybe they bring in spanghar (spelling?).

gibson will go arm chop crazy and JD and carlisle, the umps better be paying attention.

the last time we played we were missing fletch, licha and jobe IIRC

Grind them into the ground.

For mine, hooker gets roughy. Hurley gets gunston

The much maligned Kyle Hardingham eh.  I've ragged him in the past but watching the replay with a specific focus on him Ambrose and Hooker I thought Hardingham was excellent in many areas.  That's one of the key elements Bomba is looking for, versatility, so he can switch the team around to get strategic advantage at various times.  Ambrose is a certainty for this week to shake up the Hawks back line, there's no way Bomba is gonna drop the "coaches pet" who incidentally delivered 2 of Chapman's goals to him as well as a tap down to Hargingham for one of his.  Hooker won't have to chase Franklin down the wing this time, it will be interesting to see how his new confidence goes against pressure from a top team.  This looming game makes me nervous but we are a strong chance.

I agree with some of the sentiments here on Hardingham. He was very lively up forward and showed us his great marking ability. When he went down to the backline he did a good job in the second half. Certainly versatile.
But his disposal at times gets you frustrated. He had three clangers when going for short to medium passes. I think North got three goals from them. He must be able to improve that with hard core practice and dedication.
I remember Stants was a bit like that early on in his career when short passing and I think Myers the same. Watson was very ordinary early on with the foot.
What I am saying if he can improve that aspect of his game he could be a valuable member of the team.

I bet you can NOT point out 3 goals that resulted directly from Hardingham clangers. Yes his kicking is a weakness, but people keep trotting out this 3 goals from clangers line and I believe it is false. The trouble with this is that if enough people say it, others believe it to be fact.

Back it up or staop saying it!

For mine, hooker gets roughy. Hurley gets gunston

don't like fletch on hale, type of player (big, likes to make body contact and stand under highballs) he can have issues with.

No change this week. Keep Winders on ice for another week.

If he's fit, there is no point him sitting on the sidelines. If they want to ease him in, pick him as the sub. He is well suited to that role anyway.
I just can't see why you would drop anyone from last weeks performance. Winderlich got injured, again, and for mine he does not deserve to come back into a winning side. Winders is a fantastic player, but he is as unreliable as Gumbleton. Prove yourself in the 2's, and when an opportunity arises you can have a spot in our 1's.

Jesus Christ...

I'm sorry, but he is on a study tour in France at the moment and unable to take your call.

Perhaps I can be of assistance.

Winderlich does not need to proove himself to anyone. He is a walkup start to our best side and is the best we've got at delivering the ball by foot. Zac Merrett may be a very good player in time (I think he will), but Winderlich plays the same role, and has runs on the board. I'm sure Hawthorn would rather see Zerrett run out instead of Winders.

Hooker will smash Hale and confident with Hurley against Roughy.

Fletch vs Gunston is interesting. Gunston stays down a fair bit too so might get a few cheaps, but the battle will be the midfield. If they get a free run through the middle (like they have the past 4-5 times) we will be in for a world of hurt, Buddy or No Buddy

I wouldn't mind seeing Winderlich and Dempsey getting a run in the 2s if we have that luxury.

Though with Winders having had a full preseason except for the last 3 weeks, he probably won't need the run in the 2s.

What about Kommer, anyone giv him a chance of playing?
