Make that -1, after Buddy strikes out in frustration and the fifty metre penalty puts Hartley within 65m of goal.Anyone else catch a glimpse of League Teams? (shit show btw). Anyway, Derm reckons Franklin will kick 11 goals this week and Brad Johnson is tipping that he'll kick 14.Will be good when Hartley keeps him to zero.
You know when a foal is born it has to stand up immediately or die. When we draft a player, how come we give them up to 4 years to make it.New Rule #1: if a draftee cant make it into the AFL in the first year de-list and go around again.
Rule #2 Dont draft project players. Its a dog eat dog world , and no place for nice people and and even less of a place for nice footy clubs
Example: Hawthorn QED.
Good thing Sheeds over-ruled you after Hird’s first year.
I've never seen Redman play and I already know he's my new favourite player
That’s how I did it
Clearly, Worsfold doesn't rate the (highly) the players who have been on our list 3-4 and, by rights, should be stepping up to be regular players: Gleeson (more chances than any), J.Merrett (runs hot/cold), Ashby (been injured by burns the ball by foot + Kelly at 32 is a far better player), Edwards (struggles to touch the ball some games and melted in the heat in the practice game against Geelong), Ambrose (hard to know what position to play him due to his size/slow speed combination and inability to find the ball regularly), Kommer (out injured a long time, comes back, tried & found wanting).Ambrose aside (mature ager), the others would soon be moving into the 23-28 year age bracket which is the demographic that is the backbone of premiership sides generally. Worsfold doesn’t think they can cut it seems although they may get other chances as the year progresses. But they are not walk up starts to our best 22 with 12 of our best players missing.
If they are out of contract I think they will be looking for new clubs come years end. If they’re in contract they’ll be told opportunities for senior AFL action at Essendon in 2017 will be limited.
I think we will make more changes to our list come year’s end than we all, including me, previously thought.
He played Gleeson every game to date, being dropped for this doesn’t mean he has given up on him. The other players you’re talking about didn’t get much of a run under Hird either, Ashby aside.
So what’s your point?
Gleeson was dropped after a debacle of a performance on Anzac Day. Won a reprieve when Baguley didn’t come up against Carlton. Was ok in the first half and then completely disappeared from the game. He duly made way when Baguley returns. Walla clearly already the better player. Walla is a 5X better kick than Gleeson is now and perhaps ever will be.
My point is that Worsfold is more ruthless in determining who can play and who can’t than either Hird or Bomber Thompson were. He doesn’t think - or, at best, has deep reservations - that, as a group, the current list of 3-4 year players is not good enough to take the next step and become regular AFL players that can be part of a premiership side.
Worsfold is playing for keeps and looking for the most direct route to a flag and he is not going to take any prisoners along the way.
It’s been a long time - and you would have to go back almost to the first half of Sheedy’s coaching career - that we’ve had a coach this ruthless with team selection and not tolerating poor performances.
Too long.
Hence why I think we’ve been mediocre for a long time.
Valid points. But if that’s the case Daniher best get on his bike and start performing.
Daniher has the toughest job in any team in the competition - playing as the #1 KPF in the lowest scoring, slowest ball moving team in the comp missing 12 of its best players including its entire inside mid contingent.
He has still managed to be our #1 goal kicker. Has taken (I think) the 2nd most marks of any Essendon player (Gwilt I I think is #1) which is astounding when you consider we have had long stretches when the ball doesn’t get anywhere near him.
He is regularly double- & tripled team for almost entire games - the only player we have that attracts such attention. He is regularly held yet never draws a free kick so the mauling continues unchecked.
In the one game when our midfield clearly dominated & we moved the ball well, he destroyed the opposition in the air. Only inaccurate kicking for goal stopped kicking a very big bag.
He has had a much better year than many think.
Hahaha That’s a hilarious statement! He only managed to be out #1 goal kicker this week with 7. Last week he was equal #1 with 6. Next week he might be #2. Who knows
Had this conversation before and not going near it again. But if the coach is as ruthless as you are suggesting then he’d better get on his bike like I said.
I want my own project player DAMN IT.
Whoever we select at Pick 80 somethin’ in this year’s draft, I’m beginning the thread within a millisecond of Jackets reading out the name !

Exceptions prove rules.
BTW, Sheeds backed up by giving Bolton 10 years on the list. Other than that stat, can anyone really claim that Bolts “made it as an AFL player”? How many years were Henneman and Gumby on our list - to name just two others among many.
There is hope, and we have that in spades.
Then there is bad management.
I doubt anyone can claim that EFC has been the home of good management over the last 10+ years.
@"Humbert Humbert" @SheedsIsOurFather@HurleyBurley and I will be watching it down at the Elsty on Sat’dee if you’re around. Anyone else welcome of course
Wasn’t planning on it but a good option. Might just see you there.

LOL
How’s the arrogance of Worsfold??? Resting blokes against Sydney up there. Legend!
Just heard we haven't beaten Shitney in five yearsFive fkn years !!!
I guess it’ll be six
Should have beaten them Round 1 last year. Thank you umpires
Can see Joe getting man handled all game and no free then at the other end Buddy gets one for a soft push.
Always get a rogering from those ■■■■■ and I expect no different on Saturday on top of what’s probably going to be a 10 goal thrashing.

Tongue in cheek actually. We all know the real aim of footy clubs is to win premierships. So the above strategy is the basic one you need to adopt to sample the maximum number of players and pick the good ones out. By doing this you could compress development time in a rebuild by say 2 years.
Is that how I would like to see the club treat its players ? No. But does it make sense in terms of a purely outcome driven strategy? yes
Worsfold reads blitzFACT
Can’t wait til next year, some of my favs will be dropped.
I get the redman hype, but geez you rest two younger guns cos you obviously know it’s gonna be a belting of epic proportions, don’t know whether it was the smartest idea to bring him in for this game, what hope esp in this side esp even more in this forwardline does he have of even getting a touch this weekend let alone scoring a goal ?
Don’t confuse that with not wanting him in the side, I’d have just prefered it against a lesser side with the potential (even if deluded ) chance of a win and a positive memorable first game for the kid.
If we are resting players because we will get smashed then we will be resting enough players to only field 15 players at a time. Parish and Langford are being rested because they have played 6 games and played a lot of minutes in those games.
resting younger players, not players in general.
I mean if we were playing brisbane this weekend, do you think the 2 mentioned above would miss ?
I actually don’t mind it, well this season. No point smashing the younger guys against seasoned professionals just for the sake of it.
Like i said for the same reason I don’t personally get why redman was picked. Got nothing to do with form or that, just seems pointless IMO to pretty much put him in a no win situation.
That being said if he plays well it could easily set him up for the rest of the season. Tis a gamble, one i prolly wouldn’t take, but for the most part, worsfold seems to be doing the right things more often than not.

It’s not about Sydney.
I don’t care if we get smashed, I like what’s happening.
plus Robbo thought Redman was from 2014 draft.Either Robbo is the laziest “journalist” or there is something wrong with him. Then again it is probably both.
No, apparently just a pisshead. At that age it must be tough to operate constantly ■■■■■■.

Your theory would give you an extremely slow build (slow enough so that not many would actually ever be successful in the same team), of the rare type of player that proves themselves at the tender age of 18.

Maybe you are right. Probably the “tender age of 18” is the problem.
In some other sports players get 3 years of a mainstream tertiary education while they learn to play the sport of their choice.
Not only does it at least equip them to a greater extent for life when they are done with professional sport, but means they come into the system at a more mature level when they can survive at the highest level within the first year. If they are good enough to be drafted at 21
Right now, if you embark on an AFL career at 18, and are delisted at 21, its a very hard road back to the top level and any decent alternate career development is seriously compromised by then.
Buddy's last three against us2013 - 8
2014 - 5
2015 - 3
2016 - 2
buddy zero goals.

Always back to the Daniher hate. As has been pointed out in other threads he is still our top goal scorer and is 4th in the league for contested marks. As has also been pointed out that his record compares favourably to most other key forwards at his age in the competition.

I think Jerrett is contracted so will be there next year. Otherwise agree with BWAS. I think the others really need to show more by the end of the year. I thought Cooney was in trouble but has been really good over the past few weeks.
