Clearly, Worsfold doesn't rate the (highly) the players who have been on our list 3-4 and, by rights, should be stepping up to be regular players: Gleeson (more chances than any), J.Merrett (runs hot/cold), Ashby (been injured by burns the ball by foot + Kelly at 32 is a far better player), Edwards (struggles to touch the ball some games and melted in the heat in the practice game against Geelong), Ambrose (hard to know what position to play him due to his size/slow speed combination and inability to find the ball regularly), Kommer (out injured a long time, comes back, tried & found wanting).
Ambrose aside (mature ager), the others would soon be moving into the 23-28 year age bracket which is the demographic that is the backbone of premiership sides generally. Worsfold doesn’t think they can cut it seems although they may get other chances as the year progresses. But they are not walk up starts to our best 22 with 12 of our best players missing.
If they are out of contract I think they will be looking for new clubs come years end. If they’re in contract they’ll be told opportunities for senior AFL action at Essendon in 2017 will be limited.
I think we will make more changes to our list come year’s end than we all, including me, previously thought.
He played Gleeson every game to date, being dropped for this doesn’t mean he has given up on him. The other players you’re talking about didn’t get much of a run under Hird either, Ashby aside.
So what’s your point?
Gleeson was dropped after a debacle of a performance on Anzac Day. Won a reprieve when Baguley didn’t come up against Carlton. Was ok in the first half and then completely disappeared from the game. He duly made way when Baguley returns. Walla clearly already the better player. Walla is a 5X better kick than Gleeson is now and perhaps ever will be.
My point is that Worsfold is more ruthless in determining who can play and who can’t than either Hird or Bomber Thompson were. He doesn’t think - or, at best, has deep reservations - that, as a group, the current list of 3-4 year players is not good enough to take the next step and become regular AFL players that can be part of a premiership side.
Worsfold is playing for keeps and looking for the most direct route to a flag and he is not going to take any prisoners along the way.
It’s been a long time - and you would have to go back almost to the first half of Sheedy’s coaching career - that we’ve had a coach this ruthless with team selection and not tolerating poor performances.
Too long.
Hence why I think we’ve been mediocre for a long time.

Valid points. But if that’s the case Daniher best get on his bike and start performing.
Anyone else catch a glimpse of League Teams? (shit show btw). Anyway, Derm reckons Franklin will kick 11 goals this week and Brad Johnson is tipping that he'll kick 14.

Or maybe Worsfold is picking the side he thinks is the best chance for any particular week. Trying to read more into it is fraught with problems. Remember Caracella played reserves in Rd 1, 2000.
Sometimes coaches can rate players, but still want to make them work hard for it in the 2s.

Daniher has the toughest job in any team in the competition - playing as the #1 KPF in the lowest scoring, slowest ball moving team in the comp missing 12 of its best players including its entire inside mid contingent.
He has still managed to be our #1 goal kicker. Has taken (I think) the 2nd most marks of any Essendon player (Gwilt I I think is #1) which is astounding when you consider we have had long stretches when the ball doesn’t get anywhere near him.
He is regularly double- & tripled team for almost entire games - the only player we have that attracts such attention. He is regularly held yet never draws a free kick so the mauling continues unchecked.
In the one game when our midfield clearly dominated & we moved the ball well, he destroyed the opposition in the air. Only inaccurate kicking for goal stopped kicking a very big bag.
Watching Woosha with list management and selection is almost the opposite of Hird/Bomber.
Woosha walked in and cut deep and hard - Hird wanted to evaluate the list and give players a chance (prob because he played with some)
Woosha has defined roles and expect players to play that role, you don’t ill find somebody who will - Hird played favourites, envisioned a team of players he selected playing well.
Gleeson, jerrett, kommer, ambrose, edwards are garbage. Speaks huge volumes when they cant get a regular game with the suspended players out. Gleeson might make it, but itd take a huge turn around from the others to stay on the list

Neither of them think that, they’re just retired has beens who are desperately still craving the relevance that they actually had during their playing days and since they lack credibility in the intelligent discussion stakes they need to make outlandish statements in the hope that it might actually happen and prove them right on rare occasions.

Exactly: case in point Dermie. Unfortunately now, off the football field he can’t take out people with his elbow and not face a criminal conviction for GBH or assault, and spend time in gaol, Hence the struggle for relevance.

Jerrett has the advantage of being contracted for 2017. The others all have a lot to do to get a contract extension.
How’s the irony that in a year that we have our hands tied behind our back as a club we are having our best run with injury since the great war.
Laverde, Stokes and Francis as it stands.
