Lions vs Cats in serious doubt. Cyclone bearing down on the south Queensland coast
The sensible and most likely option is to shift that game to round 3
I think Queenslanders would love to see their teams playing footy this weekend if cooped up indoors with cyclonic weather outside.
I’d move both Queensland games to Melbourne.(assuming suns and lions can travel)
Same goes really what happens if Geelong can’t fly up there on Wednesday/thursday?
That would be the sensible option but knowing the AFL, they’ll gift Geelong a home game.
Geelong and Brisbane play each other twice. Still enough time to just reverse the fixture.
Why is it called round 0. It’s ■■■■■■■ stupid.
Would Gold Coast mind a reversing of the fixture?
Get Geelong early on at GMHBA when they may not be fully up and running, then use their home ground advantage later in the season when odds are Geelong will be humming?
Ouch! How can Gil look at that and say he’ll wait until Thursday to make a call?
That to me says there is no plan to shift games. It will simply be sharing the points.
It’s a pity. You’d think if you saw the forecast over the weekend just gone that you’d make the call already, find two venues in Victoria (like the one they own) and gift the QLD clubs something next season (eg. Friday night game. Extra home game etc)
Would the clubs be happy to share points? Imagine the outcry at the end of the year if one of them makes or misses the 8 because of 2 pts. It would be a dumb move given that they could just swap home games or move it to round 3.
The Brisbane Lions have raised the possibility that the opening match of AFL the season against Geelong could be postponed until round three, when the Lions and Cats have a scheduled bye, because of tropical cyclone Alfred.
However, the AFL told this masthead Thursday night’s match would go ahead as planned at the ’Gabba unless the Queensland government advised the league to call off the match over safety concerns, and it was continuing to monitor the situation.
A spokesman for the AFL said it had received no such safety advice from the government at this stage, and that the Lions had not formally requested that the match be postponed.
Two club sources, not authorised to speak about contingency conversations, said the Lions were concerned that even if it was safe for the match to go ahead on Thursday night, the wild weather was likely to hit crowd numbers.
Reverse the fixtures or play it in round 3.
I hope Geelong can’t land their plane, come back to Melbourne and they are dragged through the coals in the media all week for not taking the bus
Thats kinda my thinking, if they leave it to the day of the game what if Geelong can’t get there or may even get stuck up there.
Funny really that we are into year 2 of the opening round nonsense and it’s in tatters
How dare you threaten me with a good time
Who is going to watch the game live knowing their property may be at risk from a cyclone
Ohh, is there a chance the AFL are insured for any financial loss if the game is actually called off by Govt, but not otherwise?
They will probably have evacuated away from Brisbane anyway. Gil’s only worried about his precious tv rights.
