Russia won’t give up until it has all Donbas. Even the bits it doesn’t have.
Ukraine isn’t about to walk away from that as it’s their fortified buffer into the rest of Ukraine.
Again, I know I’m being simplistic.
But is there a world where Ukraine gives up all or part of Donbas and they and NATO fortifies it all to hell?
Ukraine negotiated in good faith in 2014?
Eight years later, after they had built up their force to the level they felt the needed, the Russians attacked again.
Any negotiated deal while Putin remains in power is just a waste of time as they will just repeat the process from 2014-2022 and then attack again.
That’s another condition Russia considers non-negotiable.
Trump will be a lame duck after the mid terms and kicked out in two years. NATO will easily survive this.
Maybe a drone attack on Putin……….
I’m disappointed but not really surprised to hear that Russia considers sending countless men into a meat-shredder for no gain preferable to realigned firm borders that was never theirs in the first place.
While I’m going on with the stupid questions…
Is there anything besides a nuclear deterrent stopping anyone from taking massive amounts of far east Russia?
The answer is no.
And that’s not how China does business these days.
They will control Russia more and more by economic means and will get what they want that way.
So…apart from China the answer is China.
Edit: I mean that China is both the only ones who could and the only reason nobody else would.
Japan will want it’s Kuril islands back, but they aren’t about to stage an invasion to do so!
I don’t think firm borders are Russia’s thing. There always needs to be some fringe uncertainty in the sphere of influence, allowing a bit more of a push west…
“I have no way to defend my borders but to extend them”
