In this case I was really just pointing out the required size of the computer and comms infrastructure to store 1.433Bn faces.

But since you mention the dastardly Chinese, Where do I start? They run the second biggest economy in the world but rank about 65th in the world on GDP per capita, it means they have lots of poor people, and that enables them to get "developing country " status. Theres lots more…

I note the authorities in one Chinese city are using the facial recognition capability to name and shame people who go shoppng in their pjs. No worries, its just Xi Jinping eliminating bogans from chinese cities.

we could do with that in Melton

Very interesting, I love this stuff. I so, so hope this thing is going Supernova in my lifetime. What a sight it would be. Of course, it may have actually already occurred (hopefully) , but unless it did at least 600 years ago, I’m very unlikely to live long enough.

Did they rule out the passage of an intervening interstellar dust cloud eg. supernova ejecta? Or that due to its huge mass it is pulling a dust cloud into itself ? LIGO detection S20014 cites gravitational waves emanating from that region, but not precisely from Betelgeuse. Probably not connected.

PS. Yes I read the article. There is some conjecture that a cloud of dust/gas may be causing the obscuration. If that material is emanating from the star, it may just be the initial indicator of the supernova. So keep watching it Saladin. This could be big !

They could do with that in Melton.

Reminds me of the “Gold” chewing Gum I used to get as a kid in those little cloth bags.

Hmmm…it appears a terra-forming alien race has made a stand on the Sun.

That’s a terra-fying thought.

I’m looking forward to the time when scientists have developed a rocket capable of reaching the sun.

Of course, given its immense heat, you’d have to send it up at night.

Even though it’s plane related I decided not to post this in the travel thread, because… you’ll see why.

Interesting video of deliberately crashing a plane to understand how to make them safer. It’s a very decent crash.

Can can’t help but keep wondering who piloted the plane. Pretty sure dummy tech isn’t that advanced even now let alone the 80s…
