Season 2020 - Melbourne

Melbourne are a lot like Essendon

The Dees dropped some games they shouldn’t have which cost them ultimately. Losing to Sydney and Freo in successive weeks did them in. Ultimately, they aren’t as good a team as their 2018, and they aren’t as bad a team as their 2019. I always thought the answer lied somewhere in between those 2 extremes of everything that could’ve gone right did go right (2018) and everything that could’ve gone wrong for them did go wrong (2019). How they improve on this season will be difficult without a first-round draft pick in their possession, which they shipped to North as part of a deal that allowed them an extra top-10 pick in the 2019 draft.

Bennell just retired.

What a wasted career - such a talented junior footballer.

Poor bastards

Has there been a bigger waste of talent over the past 20 years? Struggling to think of one.

Looked like a certain Brownlow medalist during his first two seasons at GC.

Can’t wait for the thread calling for us to pick him up.

We should have rolled the dice on him; Richmond would have; we’re too conservative etc. etc.

Cupido would come close.

What happened to him this season? Injuries again?

Form iirc.
Actually think he got through most of the year (physically) unscathed.

that was so 2019.

I feel like I’ve missed something with cupido.

Want really engaged with footy while he was playing and there is so little footage of him on the net.

Covid breach and a 50K fine to Melb.

If Orazio goes we could use another player with dodgy calves (think his hammys are OK though), maybe we should pick him up as Happ suggested.

Ahh Cupido what could have been was part of the Caracella trade

Even though he’s retired?

If his heart was still in it, surely he’d stay with the Dees.

I can’t think of a modern play that’s a really good comparison (Stevie J probably the closest, or even a bigger version of Eddie Betts), but if you can remember Nathan Brown at Richmond pre-leg break (3.5 goals, 20 disposals a game) that’s a pretty good indication of the level Cupido could play at.
Even when he was fat and washed up he still torched a lot of VFL caliber guys playing local level.

Yeah, there isn’t really a modern comparison. Cupido had skunk vomit for brains and when it came to ethics and integrity, skunk vomit looked down on him, but he had talent to burn. And burn it he did.

That Anzac day game where he and Hird both kicked 5, and Lloyd kicked 6, will remain etched in my memory forever.

I basically remember him playing as a 6’0" leading forward with us.
Early/mid-2000s was the era for it (Brown and Johnson at Dogs, Williams at Hawthorn, Medhurst at Freo, Robbo at Melbourne + a few others I’ve probably forgotten).
Went out of vogue the second teams starting clogging their defensive 50.
