Come on. It’s an awful thing to say and he should cop his wack.
But there’s a penalty for everything and there should be an ability to serve it and move on and return into the fold. Sounds like those who during the saga said our boys should be banned for life etc.
A simple form of words “like target him”, “take him out”, “make him pay”, all of those suggestions are OK and can be disguised as football acts, so no one would have batted an eyelid.
Imagine if the AFL took protecting the head this seriously. 6 weeks and a $20k fine for striking would see it out of the game a whole lot quicker than $1500 fine for a first offence (despite the player having done it multiple times throughout their career.) That said, it would also probably see a whole lot of marquee players out of the game too, and “we don’t want to see players of that caliber miss games for something like this.”
It’s a bit strange that a colloquial expression for the vagina ( which many find offensive) is quite OK, but a commonly accepted term for Australia’s earliest immigrants is not.
This is a strong sanction, and no mistake. Is this some sort of backlash to the lack of action taken against the Pies? Had stronger action been taken earlier, maybe this incident wouldn’t have happened, but it is out there now.
Tex sounds genuine in his apology. Yes, he should have known better, and yes, it will probably happen again, but l wouldn’t mind if the sanction was increased next time. There is no room for racism in the game, and the game often leads other sections of society. Stamp out racism there, and there will be some hope for future Australian society.
Next up, stronger action to be taken against stray elbows.
I reckon if you take the last 9 or 10 years the Crows are probably second only to us in terms of off field indiscretions and/or sagas.
They’ve got a rap sheet a mile long. From the infamous camp, to the Kurt Tippett fiasco, to Tyson Stengle, being caught training when supposed to be in quarantine, this Tex thing and that’s just off the top of my head.
We have all heard the view that Walker had been to many tutorials lectures and meetings about racism over the 14 years of his footy career.
I am sure the guy knows you do not say that sort of thing. There can be only one simple explanation for making an “off the cuff” remark like that, in the heat of a situation., it must have been a “freudian slip” That is defined by some as:
"…an unintentional error regarded as revealing subconscious feelings…
Clearly, all those AFLPA and Club and AFL lectures over all those years did not get right down to the source and purge the word association from his subconcious…
We see this so many times, with off the cuff remarks.
