Interesting reading the transcript here you can see that Caro was onto something (well obviously, someone leaked it to her but you know).
The way he’s answered those questions I don’t reckon they were rapt that those two players made themselves unavailable but are now sucking it up and dialing up the support, empathy mantra publicly.

Too little too late.
In a team sport either the CEO or GM of footy has backchanneled the press to whack players.
Massive loss of trust right there. Wouldn’t surprise if the wheels well and truely fall off at the club now.
Even his weasel word apology. We were disappointed but supportive. The guys put their families first, that’s not something to be disappointed by. From the ex head of the AFLPA too.
To borrow words from Caro, his position is untenable.

The AFL boys club really does seem to cultivate and allow to thrive extremely bereft individuals. I mean just look at the Saints’ “leadership” in Finnis and Lethlean. Guys like the Aulds, even McLaughlin. I don’t see these defunct humans surviving (let alone progressing in the way that they have) in any progressive/modern industry. They have to revert to the absolute protection of an insular, nepotistic institution which has been designed to protect the interests of incapable men.

What I laugh at is that the clubs who the AFL were really concerned about in recent times and responded by sending AFL company men in to ‘fix them’ have absolutely farked them up.
Saints - Lethlean and Finnis.
Got impatient and chased mediocre, cooked players on big money and are now in no man’s land from a list perspective and episodes like this also highlight a poor club culture.

Fundamental issue with these guys is that they aren’t the Saints’ leadership. They’re the AFL branch managers assigned to run the Saints for the benefit of the AFL. They have no skin in the game. They don’t care what happens to St Kilda, their interest is entirely with the AFL.

This. Given how it’s been handled by the club as a player you’d be confused and wary and disappointed about how to address such issues in the future with a high level of trust.
Sure, stuff comes out of footy clubs (and a whole heap of other oganisations). People who know stuff like to blab and the media go looking for them. But if this has come out at the senior level of the club then that’s very very poor leadership and fulfilling your duties properly.
